Prep Roundup: Late pick-6 gives Lawrence County win at Ardmore

Oct. 3—ARDMORE — Bryson Sawyer returned an interception 80 yards for a touchdown as time expired on Friday, propelling Lawrence County to a 32-26 win over Ardmore in Class 4A, Region 7 play on Friday.

Sawyer’s game-winning turnover capped a game that saw Lawrence County running back Tavian Jones set program records for rushing yards (310) and carries (37) in a single game.

Jones finished with three rushing touchdowns for the Red Devils, while Sawyer added a 16-yard touchdown run.

Javeon Riddle had two rushing touchdowns for Ardmore, which led 20-6 at halftime. Judah Wise returned a kick 74 yards for a score for the Tigers and Jailyn Smith had a 64-yard touchdown run.

Lawrence County (3-4, 1-3) continues region play next week at home against Brooks. Ardmore (2-4, 1-3) hosts Deshler in region play.

Florence 40, Athens 21: Jaxson Moore tossed a pair of touchdown passes to Mike Hubbard but Athens couldn’t overcome a slow start in a Class 5A, Region 7 game on Friday.

Florence jumped out to a 34-0 lead before Moore connected with Hubbard for Athens’ first score in the third quarter. The pair connected on a second touchdown strike in the third quarter to cut the Florence lead to 34-14 and Jaylen Johnson closed out the Athens scoring with a touchdown run late in the fourth.

Athens (3-3, 2-2) hosts Russellville in a region game next week. Florence (6-0, 4-0) hosts East Limestone.

JB Pennington 31, Falkville 18: Falkville quarterback Reed Dillard completed 12 of 22 passes for 178 yards and a pair of touchdowns in a Class 2A, Region 7 game on Friday.

Dillard connected with Briley Tomlin and Tristan Moore on scoring passes and had one interception. Tomlin caught five passes for 102 yards and had an interception on defense.

Falkville (3-3, 2-2) continues region play next week at Sheffield.

Rogers 20, West Limestone 17: Travis McCluskey and Brayden Moore had one rushing touchdown each as West Limestone dropped a tight Class 3A, Region 7 contest on Friday.

A 27-yard field goal by Enrique Perez and a 3-yard touchdown run by McCluskey gave West Limestone a 10-0 lead with 8:13 to play in the first half.

Rogers answered with a pair of touchdown runs from quarterback Cajerrius Davis to take a 13-10 lead into the half.

Moore scored on a 1-yard run to give West Limestone a 17-13 lead midway through the fourth quarter before Rogers went ahead for good on a 47-yard pass from Davis to Cort Crunk on the first play of the fourth quarter.

West Limestone (3-3, 2-2) continues region play next week at Wilson.

Decatur Heritage 28, Shoals Christian 7: Reed Rogers accounted for four total touchdowns, three passing and one rushing, as Decatur Heritage picked up a win in Class A, Region 4 play on Thursday.

Rogers tossed a pair of touchdown passes to Trey Burden and one scoring strike to Dallas Meeks.

Decatur Heritage (2-3, 2-1) continues region play next week at Coosa Christian.

Decatur 26, Pope John Paul II 0: Seventh-grader Julie’Anna Morgan rushed for three touchdowns in a big win for Decatur on Thursday.

Maura Coats, also a seventh grader, passed for 148 yards and Hayden Burnett had one touchdown. Colette Jacques, Sniyah Emerson and Laci Guess all had one interception.

East Lawrence gets area win: East Lawrence picked up an area win on Thursday, defeating Haleyville 25-19, 25-22, 16-25, 28-26.

Macey Austin led the Eagles with 15 kills and 25 digs, while Averie Hargett added nine kills and eight blocks. Chloe Gatlin finished with 30 assists and Lorali Copeland had 10 digs and five kills.
