The Prince and Princess of Wales have been snapped with Hollywood actor Tom Cruise on a number of occasions, and William and Tom are said to have developed ‘quite a friendship’ over a shared love

With one acting royalty and the other actual royalty, it’s no surprise that Tom Cruise has struck up “quite a friendship” with Prince William. The Prince and Princess of Wales have been snapped with the A-list actor on multiple occasions, but one royal expert believed their relationship goes beyond what cameras have captured in recent years.

In 2022, Cruise mixed with the royal couple at the premiere of his film Top Gun: Maverick as they made their way down the red carpet. Further images show the actor grasping Kate’s hand, while also sharing a joke with the future King and Queen.

In February 2024, Tom and William were spotted laughing together once more, and posing for photographs at London’s Air Ambulance Charity Gala Dinner. And according to the Daily Mail’s Richard Eden, the duo have “developed quite a friendship over the years” thanks to their mutual passion for aviation.

Tom – who was seen at the World Cup final last week – once said of his bond with the heir to throne: “We have a lot in common. We both love England and we’re both aviators, we both love flying.”

William and Tom’s joint appearance at the London Air Ambulance Charity Gala came just weeks after the King’s shock cancer diagnosis back in February 2024.

Buckingham Palace announced that Charles had an undisclosed form of cancer – and just weeks after this news became public, Kate also revealed that she too was undergoing cancer treatment.

Addressing the assembled guests at the event, the Prince of Wales said: “I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you, also, for the kind messages of support for Catherine and for my father, especially in recent days. It means a great deal to us all.

“It’s fair to say the past few weeks have had a rather medical focus. So I thought I’d come to an air ambulance function to get away from it all!”.

William then took aim at Tom with a light-hearted jibe, referencing the Hollywood star’s legendary high-octane film stunts. He said: “Here in London, the current aircraft have served magnificently. But our capital city needs a new fleet.”

He continued: “And we are up against time. The clue really is in the Appeal’s name. By September, we need the two new red birds – decked with the latest kit such as night vision – in our skies. I should also take this opportunity to give a mention to my – our – fellow pilot, Tom Cruise. Tom, huge thanks for supporting us tonight.”

Meanwhile, just last year, Tom also lent his support to another of William’s passion projects – the Earthshot Prize – and he sent a surprise video message that was played during the awards ceremony in Rio de Janeiro, where he dubbed the prince a “dear friend”.

Tom’s connections with the Royal Family stretch back to the early 1990s. Photographs from that era capture him meeting William’s now late mother Princess Diana, and subsequently attending her funeral in 1997.

In 2017, he was also pictured in conversation with Prince Philip, who passed away in 2021, at the 75th anniversary of the Outward Bound Trust at Buckingham Palace.
