Breton is well and truly back thanks to Kate Middleton’s latest Parisian-inspired look

A class stripe top and summer go hand in hand, but we’d forgotten quite how good this basic wardrobe essential can look when styled correctly. Proving that sometimes the simplest outfit combination packs the most punch is Kate Middleton, who paired a Breton vest with a midi skirt over the weekend.

Pictured at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, Kate, joined by her whole family, was all smiles as she watched the action from the stands. The Princess wore the Parisian-inspired top from La Ligne, a trendy brand founded in 2016 by former Vogue editors Meredith Melling and Valerie Macaulay. Unfortunately, the top is old season, but there are plenty of Breton buys to browse still online at La Ligne now.

However, the high street has some gems when it comes to stripes. So take inspiration from Kate and pick up the French wardrobe basic you’ll wear on repeat for the rest of summer.

Our top ‘copy-Kate’ pick is Joules’ Holly Cream & Navy Striped Knitted Vest, on sale for £21 at Next. With its soft knit, cream and navy striped design and classic crew neckline, this sleeveless vest is a timeless staple. Ribbed trims add structure, and the relaxed shape makes it easy to layer over shirts or under jackets.

If you have a bit more to spend, Whistles’ Striped Bouclé Knitted Tank Top, on sale for £69 at Selfridges, is also a gorgeous Kate-like alternative. The textured finish gives the classic cream-and-black stripes extra dimension, elevating it beyond a standard knitted vest. A crew neckline, sleeveless cut and ribbed trims keep the silhouette clean and timeless, making it a piece you’ll pull out year after year.

Over at New Look, the Blue Striped Cotton Rich Slash Neck Vest for £8.99 is our bargain choice. It doesn’t have the fine knit texture Kate’s vest and the two above have, but it will give you a very similar look. Plus, a jersey fabric in the heat means you won’t overheat.

Complete your royal-approved Breton look by pairing your top with a white pleated midi skirt. Karen Millen’s Satin Tux Tailored Pleated Skirt, £66, is an excellent alternative to Kate’s designer buy, and it will pair with everything from basic tops to blazer and shirt combinations.
