Hyderabad:AICC leader and MP Priyanka Gandhi praised Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy for presenting alternative suggestions and exposing shortcomings in the BJP-led Central government’s approach to delimitation.
According to a media statement issued by Chief Minister’s Office, the appreciation came when Revanth Reddy called on her in Delhi on Saturday to congratulate her for playing a key role in stalling an “undemocratic” Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill in Parliament on Friday. Priyanka Gandhi commended Revanth Reddy’s efforts in highlighting flaws in the proposed constituency reorganisation and for working towards building unity among southern states on the issue. She noted that such interventions were crucial to safeguard the interests of States that could be adversely affected by the proposed changes.
Revanth Reddy, in turn, expressed gratitude to Priyanka Gandhi for her support to Opposition unity and her role in strengthening collective resistance against an undemocratic constitutional amendment proposed by the Centre. He conveyed thanks on behalf of the people of Telangana for her backing to initiatives led by Rahul Gandhi, leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, and AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge in bringing together Opposition forces to protect the country’s democratic framework.
The Chief Minister reiterated that the proposed delimitation exercise could weaken southern, northeastern, and smaller states, stressing the need for a united stand to safeguard federal principles and ensure equitable representation.
During the interaction, Priyanka Gandhi also criticised the Centre for convening a special session in the name of women’s empowerment while advancing an unnecessary delimitation agenda. She pointed out that the women’s reservation bill had already received unanimous approval and said linking it with fresh delimitation proposals was unwarranted.
