Speaker puts MPs on blast for ‘race to the bottom’ behaviour
It seems every other week brings a new low for MPs’ actions in Queensland parliament. This one is no exception.
Even Speaker Pat Weir, it seems, agrees. Launching into a blast for all MPs this morning, he scolded them on a number of fronts.
The first? Labor MPs interrupting Treasurer David Janetzki’s budget speech on Tuesday, with warnings for three of them that “once would have been unimagined”.
Then came Opposition Leader Steven Miles’ budget reply speech yesterday, which was stretched out by more than 15 minutes by interrupting points of order from government members.
This was despite Weir, an LNP MP, urging them – but not issuing any formal warnings – about the proper process of writing to him if they wanted to raise issues about misleading content in a speech.
