A railway loco pilot working with the central government was arrested by Tirupati district police for allegedly murdering an elderly woman and robbing her gold jewellery and cash at her house earlier this month.
The accused, Pasham Rupesh Kumar (36), was taken into custody near Krishnapatnam railway station after a technical investigation carried out by special police teams, Tirupati superintendent of police L. Subba Rayudu said on Sunday.
According to the SP, the victim, M. Jyothi (69), was found murdered at her residence in Vijayanagar locality of Sainagar panchayat under Tirupati Rural police station limits on July 14. She was living alone when the accused allegedly entered the house, killed her and escaped with 90 grams of gold jewellery worth about ₹12 lakh and ₹47,000 in cash.
Rayudu said the accused was known to the victim’s family and had been facing financial problems due to debts. Investigators alleged that he targeted the woman after learning about her living arrangements.
During the investigation, police found that the accused had allegedly tried to conceal his identity by wearing a black burqa, a face scarf and a helmet while travelling to Tirupati. He had also allegedly stolen a scooter belonging to another railway employee and fixed a fake registration number plate on it before using it for the crime.
The SP said CCTV footage, digital evidence and other technical inputs helped investigators trace the movements of the accused, leading to his arrest. The stolen gold jewellery, the weapon believed to have been used in the offence and the scooter were recovered from his possession, according to the SP.
Rayudu said the case was solved using scientific and technical methods of investigation. He said the police would continue to use modern investigative tools to detect crimes and bring offenders to justice.
Foul smell leads neighbours to woman’s death in Proddatur
A 46-year-old woman was found dead in her residence in Proddatur town of the YSR Kadapa district, days after her suspected death came to light following a foul smell emanating from the house.
The deceased has been identified as K. Susan Rani, a resident of Vasantapet in Proddatur. According to police, she had been living alone in a small portion on the terrace of a house after reportedly separating from her husband, Satyanand Kumar, due to marital differences. The couple, who married about a decade ago, had no children.
The incident came to light on the night of July 25 when neighbours noticed a strong foul smell coming from her residence and alerted her relatives. “We sensed something was wrong when the smell became unbearable. We immediately informed the family members and the police,” a local resident said.
Susan Rani’s sister, Hepsiba, lodged a complaint with the police. Acting on the information, the police reached the spot, broke open the door, and found the woman lying dead inside the house. Preliminary observations suggest that she had died three to four days prior to the discovery.
“My sister’s death appears suspicious. I request the police to conduct a thorough investigation and find out what exactly happened,” Hepsiba said.
One-town sub-inspector Srinivasulu confirmed that a case has been registered and an investigation is underway. “We are examining all possible angles. The exact cause of death will be known after the post-mortem,” he said. The body has been shifted for autopsy, and further enquiries are in progress.
42 vehicles seized during cordon and search operations in Nellore district
SPSR Nellore police conducted large-scale cordon and search operations (CASO) in Lake View Colony under Dargamitta Police Station limits in Nellore and Kadivedu village under Chillakur Police Station on Sunday as part of a district-wide drive to strengthen law and order.
In Dargamitta, a special team led by the circle inspector, along with two sub-inspectors and 30 police personnel, conducted searches between 5 pm and 7 pm. During the operation, police seized 26 two-wheelers and two autorickshaws lacking valid documents. A rowdy-sheeter involved in previous cases was also identified, summoned to the police station, counselled and warned against engaging in unlawful activities.
In Chillakur, police led by the Gudur Rural circle inspector inspected around 125 houses in Kadivedu village. They seized 16 two-wheelers without valid documents for further verification.
Following the operations, police held awareness programmes for residents on women’s and child safety, road safety, helmet use, cybercrime prevention, emergency services, anti-drug awareness and property crime prevention. They urged the public to promptly report suspicious persons and anti-social activities, stating that community cooperation is vital for effective crime prevention.
Man stabs wife to death in West Godavari
A man, Mangam Murali, stabbed his wife Mangam Lakshmi (45) of Undi Village in West Godavari district on Sunday evening as she refused to give money to him for alcohol.
According to Undi police, the accused, Murali, is a boozer, and he frequently harassed her for money for liquor. Quarrels took place between the two of them frequently. When she refused to give money to him, he stabbed him with a knife. Bhimavaram DSP Raghuveer Vishnu, Akivid circle inspector G. Kali Charan, and Undi sub-inspector H. Youth dies by suicide in Srikakulam town
A 20-year-old youth died by suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan in his residence at the Housing Board colony in Srikakulam town. The deceased was identified as G. Chandrakanth, an employee with the education department. The police said the youngster’s father passed away a few months ago, and Chandrakanth got the job after his father’s death on compassionate grounds. The youngster took the extreme step due to family disputes.
One dies in a road mishap
A 24-year-old youth was killed in a road accident after his bike skidded off at the Seethammadhara locality under MVP police station limits in Vizag city. The deceased was identified as K. Nikelesh, an engineering graduate.
Cases booked against two former YSRC MLAs
Rangampet police filed two cases against the former Rajanagaram MLA and YSRC youth wing state president Jakkampudi Raja and also former Anaparthi MLA Sathi Suryanarayana Reddy, based on the complaint lodged by village revenue officer K. Durga regarding traffic disruption on April 24 and also another complaint, lodged by police station constable B.S. Chandrasekhar, about obstruction of official duties.
The constable alleged in the complaint that Raja used harsh language against the CI and DSP. Rangampeta police went to Raja’s house and served the notices to them. According to the complaint of VRO Raja, Suryanarayana Reddy and M. Govinda Raju, former ZPTC member Pepakayala Rambabu came to the police station and demanded the police should not arrest an accused in a case, and they also obstructed the vehicles by picketing on the road. Constable Chandrasekhar stated in the complaint that YSRC leaders Ch. Veerababu, M. Venkata Rao, Pepakayala Rambabu, A. Venkateswara Rao and some others kidnapped Guthula Yesaiah and Vithanala Buraiah on April 23 regarding the elections of a fishermen society.
