Hyderabad:The city experienced sharply uneven rainfall on Saturday, with some parts recording more than 60 mm while several monitoring points reported no rain at all, as showers also disrupted traffic around busy Ganesh festival areas.
The rain was particularly heavy across the southern and southeastern parts of the city, including Rajendranagar, Shamshabad, Barkas, Katedan, Sivarampally, Budvel, Chandrayangutta, Mamidipalle, Balapur and Bandlaguda Jagir. Jubilee Hills, Filmnagar, Manikonda, Ramantapur, Khairatabad, Masab Tank and Nampally also received showers during the evening.
Telangana Development Planning Society data showed Nagole recording 63.3 mm, followed by Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at 59.5 mm, Rajendranagar at 44.3 mm, Sivarampally at 44 mm and Attapur at 40.3 mm. Madhuranagar recorded 30.8 mm, while Kankanpally and Rock Town Colony in Nagole recorded 28.8 mm and 28.3 mm respectively.
The rainfall distribution, however, remained highly localised. Monitoring points drew a blank at Kukatpally, Kompally, Patancheru, Nacharam, Mettuguda, Madhapur, Charminar, Nizampet, Alwal, Yousufguda, Musheerabad, Malkajgiri, Falaknuma, Ameerpet, Miyapur, Kapra and Uppal.
The rain also added to traffic pressure during the ongoing Ganesh festival. Traffic movement was affected on several busy and waterlogged stretches, while diversions remain in force around the Khairatabad Bada Ganesh area. Cyberabad Traffic Police have advised companies and educational institutions to consider staggered working, early logouts, work from home and online classes from September 18 to 25 because of the combination of rain and Ganesh immersion activity.
The India Meteorological Department-Hyderabad said the rain spell is set to continue across Telangana. Light to moderate rain or thundershowers are forecast at many places on September 20 and 21 and at most places from September 22 to 25.
For Hyderabad, the next 48 hours are expected to remain generally cloudy, with light to moderate rain and occasional intense spells towards the evening or night. The maximum temperature is expected to fall to around 32°C, with the minimum around 23°C.
The IMD-H has issued yellow warnings for heavy rain in several districts on September 19-21. On September 22, an orange warning for heavy to very heavy rain has been issued for Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Mahabubabad, Warangal and Hanamkonda, with a yellow warning for Hyderabad, Rangareddy and several other districts.
Another orange warning covers several districts on September 23. On September 24 and 25, the IMD has forecast isolated heavy to very heavy rain across Telangana, along with squally winds of 50-60 kmph at isolated places. Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph, and in some districts 40-50 kmph, are also forecast during the period.
The weather system driving the spell is also strengthening, IMD scientists said. The upper-air circulation over the north Andaman Sea is expected to form a low-pressure area and intensify into a depression over the eastcentral Bay of Bengal on September 21 and a deep depression on September 22, before moving towards the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coast around September 23.
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon began withdrawing from parts of West Rajasthan on Saturday, but the IMD forecast indicates that its withdrawal is not signalling an immediate end to rainfall over Telangana.
