Plotline of Raja Shivaji
Raja Shivaji follows the story of Maratha warrior, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, from his birth to the Battle of Pratapgarh. Set in 1630 AD, ‘Shivaji Raje Bhonsle’ (played by Riteish Deshmukh) is born to ‘Shahji Raje’ and his wife, ‘Jijabai’ (played by Bhagyashree). After years of serving the ‘Nizams’, ‘Shivaji’ pledges his loyalty to the Sultanate of Bijapur led by Mohammed ‘Adil Shah’ (played by Amol Gupte). However, ‘Adil Shah’s’ wife, ‘Khadija Sultana’ (played by Vidya Balan), and commander, ‘Afzal Khan’ (played by Sanjay Dutt), trick ‘Shahji’s’ older son, ‘Shambhu’ (played by Abhishek Bachchan), into working for the Bijapur Sultanate under ‘Afzal’.

Following this, ‘Afzal’ kills ‘Shambhu’ out of spite and leaves ‘Shivaji’ infuriated. As ‘Jijabai’ processes the grief, she asks ‘Shivaji’ to bring her ‘Afzal’s’ head. It was ‘Khadija Sultana’ who instigated ‘Afzal’ to kill ‘Shivaji’ as she feared his growing power. By this time, ‘Shivaji’ takes over the Jawali region and ‘Adil Shah’ passes away after getting this news. After his death, his son, ‘Ali Adil Shah II’, takes over the throne and ‘Khadija’ acts as his regent. While ‘Khadija’ and ‘Afzal’ plot to kill ‘Shivaji’, he and his wife, ‘Saibai’ (played by Genelia Deshmukh), welcome their first son, ‘Shambhu’ a.k.a ‘Sambhaji Raje Bhonsle’ and name him after his late brother.

‘Afzal Khan’ kills his 63 wives after a saint predicts his future and is sceptical about his success in killing ‘Shivaji’
Before going to Jawali, ‘Afzal’ went to consult a Sufi saint, ‘Peer Baba’, to predict his future. The saint is sceptical about ‘Afzal’s’ success in killing ‘Shivaji’, and at the same moment, his trusted elephant suddenly collapses, further affecting his morale. After ‘Peer Baba’s’ prediction, ‘Afzal’s’ 63 wives grow concerned about his health. Out of anger for doubting about his well-being, ‘Afzal’ kills all of them.

‘Saibai’ bids farewell to her husband, ‘Shivaji’ and prays for his victory
Upon learning about ‘Afzal’s’ plan to attack the Marathas, ‘Shivaji’s’ advisor, ‘Tanaji’ asks him to leave the Rajgad fort to buy time to defend the Marathas. At the time, ‘Saibai’ worries about her husband’s health and opens up about her own deteriorating health condition. Thus, she refuses to leave Rajgad and bids an emotional goodbye to ‘Shivaji’ and prays for his victory. ‘Shivaji’ builds Fort Pratapgarh in Jawali and uses his wit to defeat ‘Afzal Khan’. As part of his plan, ‘Shivaji’ instructs the warriors to evacuate the Fort before ‘Afzal’s’ arrival, giving the ‘Adil Shahi’ army a false belief about their win.

Due to harsh weather conditions, ‘Afzal Khan’ is forced to set up camp in the Mawal region. He sends his personal adviser, ‘Krishnaji’, to ask ‘Shivaji’ to respond to his message. ‘Shivaji’ tricks ‘Krishnaji’ and pretends to be ill, making him believe that he is not ready to fight ‘Afzal’. Thus, he sends his envoy ‘Pantji’ to negotiate ‘Afzal’. But ‘Afzal’ refuses to go to Pratapgarh. At the same time, ‘Shivaji’ learns about ‘Saibai’s’ death, who is laid to rest by their son, ‘Sambhaji’.

Will ‘Shivaji Raje’ succeed in killing ‘Afzal Khan’?
While ‘Afzal’ refuses to visit Pratapgarh, in Bijapur, ‘Khadija Sultana’ grows desperate as she gets no response from ‘Afzal’ regarding ‘Shivaji’s’ death. She mocks his incompetence by instigating him to negotiate with ‘Shivaji’. ‘Afzal’ agrees to meet ‘Shivaji’ without bodyguards or weapons in a shamiana, knowing that the latter is ill and has no strength to defeat him. On the day of the meeting, both ‘Shivaji’ and ‘Afzal’ enter the shamiana while their men wait outside.
Their envoys, ‘Pantji’ and ‘Krishnaji’, take both their weapons, allowing the duo to speak in private. As the envoys leave, ‘Afzal’ invites ‘Shivaji’ for an embrace and tries to stab him. But as ‘Shivaji’ was wearing a hidden protective armour, it didn’t seriously harm him. He quickly retaliates and injures ‘Afzal’ with his famous wagh nakh. ‘Shivaji’ kills ‘Afzal’ by cutting his throat while the latter cries out. Hearing his cries, his boyguard, ‘Bada Sayyad’, enters the tent only to get defeated by ‘Shivaji’s’ bodyguard, ‘Jiva Mahale’. The film ends with ‘Shivaji’ sending ‘Afzal’s’ head to his mother, ‘Jijabai’.
