Hyderabad: BJP Telangana president N. Ramchander Rao accused the Congress in the state of “ill-treating” students by failing to deliver on election promises, withholding fee reimbursement dues, and unleashing police force against youth protests.
In a post on his social media handle, Rao said the state government’s response to student agitations had exposed its disregard for their aspirations. Sharing a video on police action on students, Rao alleged that after students took to the streets following the government’s failure to fulfill its promise of “two lakh jobs a year”, the ruling dispensation responded with “police brutality” instead of accountability.
Rao focused heavily on the issue of fee reimbursement, and claimed that about 20 lakh students from SC, ST, BC and EBC communities were being jeopardized. He put the outstanding amount at around ₹12,000 crore.
“If you genuinely cared about students, you would have addressed their concerns,” he said, addressing Chief Minister Revanth Reddy.
The BJP leader also invoked the history of the Telangana movement, alleging that the Congress was responsible for the deaths of nearly 1,200 youth and students during the second phase of the statehood agitation due to “U-turns and betrayals”. He demanded an apology from the party, noting that neither the current leadership nor their predecessors have ever apologised for the 1969 Telangana agitation in which students were allegedly fired upon, or for the later phase of the movement.
Rao further alleged that the state government had attempted to “grab university land for real estate,” and added: “For you, it was never really about the students. You are merely using them as political pawns.”
