Randolph Mantooth, the beloved television actor best known for playing firefighter-paramedic ‘John Gage’ on the groundbreaking 1970s series Emergency!, has passed away. The actor was 80 years old and had been battling multiple forms of cancer for several years.
Mantooth’s family confirmed that the TV veteran died peacefully on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at a hospice facility in Ventura, California, surrounded by family and close friends.
What was Randolph Mantooth’s cause of death?
Mantooth’s brother, Donald Mantooth, says that there was not a single factor behind his demise, as the actor had been battling a variety of cancers for years. Speaking to TMZ, Donald revealed that Randolph’s years-long health battle began with throat cancer, and he developed additional forms of cancer over time.
“He had been sick for several years with a variety of cancers, starting with throat cancer,” Donald said, adding that his brother “battled them as best he could,” but the illnesses eventually took too great a toll on his body.
After his passing, Mantooth’s family confirmed the news in a heartfelt statement, saying their beloved ‘Randy’ passed from “a long illness.” His family said:
“Those closest to Randy will remember his sense of humor and his love of storytelling. He had a remarkable ability to share a story and find humor in everyday moments. He especially loved celebrating Fiesta at his Santa Barbara home and gathering friends and family for backyard barbecues around the firepit, where stories, laughter, and memories were shared late into the evening.”

The family extended gratitude to the industry for the “compassion and support shown during Randy’s life”, and described the actor as a “beloved husband, brother, uncle and friend.”
