Raipur: In a rare recovery of a document, the execution order against Chhattisgarh’s first freedom fighter, Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh, issued by the British administration 169 years ago, has been found in a museum in the Baloda Bazaar- Bhatapara district.
The order, dated December 10, 1857, was housed at the Sonakhan Museum in the district and documented during the ongoing Gyan Bharatam National Manuscripts Survey in Chhattisgarh, a senior district officer told this newspaper on Tuesday.
“It records the execution order issued by the British administration against Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh, recognised as Chhattisgarh’s first freedom fighter”, the officer said. The document serves as direct evidence of his martyrdom during the early phase of the freedom struggle, he added.
In another important finding during the survey, a set of 326-year-old handwritten manuscripts has been identified and digitised at the Sadhguru Kabir Ashram in Damakheda, located in Sigma block of Baloda Bazar- Bhatapara district.
The manuscripts reflect a sustained tradition of knowledge writing in the region, preserved across generations. Ancient texts were documented at the site: ‘Anurag Sagar’, ‘Ambu Sagar’, and ‘Gyan Prakash’.
The works, written in Devanagari and attributed to the ninth Acharya, Pragat Naam Saheb, stand as records of the region’s literary tradition, an official spokesman said.
The Gyan Bharatam National Manuscript Survey is an initiative aimed at mapping the manuscripts present across India and laying the groundwork for their systematic preservation, research and digitization. The exercise in Baloda Bazaar-Bhatapara is being carried out under the guidance of the local district collector Kuldeep Sharma.
