Preview for Real Madrid v Sevilla
Real Madrid were staring at defeat in Rome on Wednesday night but after three goals in seven minutes, José Mourinho’s side were celebrating one of the great European comebacks of recent years, and they return to the Bernabéu on Sunday evening on a massive high.
Donyell Malen’s double had Roma 3-1 up with the clock ticking down at the Olimpico. Then Carlos Espí and Endrick came off the bench to score, and Antonio Rüdiger completed a remarkable 4-3 win. It has Madrid on six points from two games in the Champions League.
The domestic picture is more pressing. Madrid are fourth in La Liga and with the Clásico at Camp Nou next weekend, they cannot afford to drop points against Sevilla. They bounced back from their 2-1 derby defeat against Atletico Madrid with a 1-0 win over Villarreal last weekend, and they have been very strong at the Bernabéu, winning their last four home league games.
They will have to do it without Vinícius Júnior, though. The Brazilian was sent off against Villarreal for pulling Nathan Saliba’s hair, and he has been handed a four-match ban. Madrid’s appeal has been rejected, so he will also miss the Clásico.
Sevilla have been one of the surprise packages of the season so far. Luis García Plaza’s side are fifth with 14 points from eight games, just four behind Madrid, which is a huge improvement on the 2024-25 campaign, when they finished 17th and only narrowly avoided relegation. They have also had a full week to prepare, as they haven’t played since a 3-3 draw at Levante on Monday night.
History is heavily against them, though. Sevilla are on a 15-game winless run against Madrid in all competitions, losing 13 of those, and they have lost the last five meetings in a row. Their last league win at the Bernabéu came back in December 2008.

Vinícius is suspended, and Éder Militão (muscle), Rodrygo (knee), Ferland Mendy (hip) and Raúl Asencio (leg) are all still out. Militão is back in training with the group but isn’t sharp enough to return yet.
Yan Diomande, who scored the winner against Villarreal, is expected to move to the left of the attack to replace Vinícius, with Arda Güler coming in on the right. Dean Huijsen should be recalled at centre-back.
Endrick and Espí both scored off the bench in Rome, but they are likely to start on the bench again on Sunday.
For Sevilla, Isaac Romero is suspended after being sent off against Levante. Marcão (muscle), Jon Guridi (adductor) and Miguel Sierra (shoulder) are all injured.
Robbie Ure scored his first goal for the club at Levante and is expected to lead the line in Romero’s absence. Youssouf Fofana, one of Sevilla’s standout performers so far, should start in midfield.
