Ted Kaczynski’s early life and his years at Harvard
Ted Kaczynski was born on May 22, 1942, in Chicago to Polish-American parents. A profoundly gifted child with an IQ reported between 160 and 170, he skipped 11th grade and entered Harvard University in 1958 at just 16 on a full scholarship to study mathematics.
At Harvard, he was socially isolated, living alone and described by peers as a loner. In his sophomore year, he volunteered for a study run by the Department of Social Relations chairman, Dr. Henry A. Murray, a psychologist who had worked for the OSS, the CIA’s predecessor.
Participants were told they would debate their personal philosophy with another student. Instead, they were asked to write detailed essays about their beliefs and aspirations, then subjected to prolonged, personalized interrogation. The essays were given to a law student who used them to launch what Murray himself called vehement, sweeping, and personally abusive attacks, while electrodes monitored heart rate and breathing.
Encounters were filmed from behind a one-way mirror and later played back to subjects. Ted Kaczynski spent about 200 hours in the study over three years. Some later reporting linked the work to MKUltra, the CIA’s mind-control program, though the exact connection remains debated. Kaczynski himself later said it had no significant effect.
Ted graduated from Harvard in 1962 and went to the University of Michigan, where he earned a master’s and a PhD in mathematics in 1967 with a dissertation considered outstanding. At 25, he became the youngest assistant professor ever hired by UC Berkeley, teaching geometry and calculus. He struggled with lecturing and avoiding students, and abruptly resigned in 1969 without explanation, marking his break from academic life.
The cabin, the bombing campaign, and capture
After Berkeley, Ted Kaczynski returned to his parents’ home in Illinois and then, in 1971, built a small 10-by-12-foot cabin near Lincoln, Montana, with no electricity or running water. He lived largely self-sufficiently, hunting rabbits, gardening, and reading, while developing a hardline anti-technology and anti-industrial philosophy.
Disturbed by development and road-building near his wilderness, he began sabotaging machinery. In May 1978, he started his bombing campaign, leaving his first homemade bomb made from scrap materials at Northwestern University.
Over the next 17 years, Ted Kaczynski mailed or placed 16 bombs that killed three people and injured 27 others in what became the longest manhunt in FBI history. Targets were often universities and airlines. His motive was ideological.
In 1995, he demanded that his 35,000-word manifesto, Industrial Society and Its Future, be published in a major newspaper, threatening to continue otherwise. Both The New York Times and The Washington Post printed it. That decision ended him. His younger brother David recognized the writing style and ideas and alerted the FBI.
On April 3, 1996, agents arrested Kaczynski in his cabin, where they found bomb components and the manifesto draft. In 1998, he pleaded guilty to federal charges of transportation, mailing, and use of bombs to avoid the death penalty and was sentenced to eight life sentences without parole at ADX Florence in Colorado. He died in federal prison in June 2023 at the age of 81.
