Eric Dane’s passing left a profound void in the lives of his fans and loved ones, but the loss was particularly devastating for his family. Although they knew the actor was battling a terminal illness, his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, says neither she nor their two daughters, Billie and Georgia, realized how close they were to saying their final goodbye.
In a tearful interview with Maria Shriver on the TODAY show on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Gayheart recalled the moments leading up to Dane’s death and how quickly his condition changed during his final hospital stay.
Rebecca Gayheart has “no idea” that Eric Dane’s last hospital visit would be his final one
Eric, best known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, died at 53 on February 19, 2026, after battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease. He had publicly announced his diagnosis in April 2025. Nearly nine months after his passing, Rebecca is sharing heartbreaking accounts of how she saw her longtime partner waste away with his terminal condition.
The 55-year-old actress revealed that Eric had been hospitalized several times before his death. Each time, doctors managed to stabilize him, and he eventually returned home. She recalled:
“He had gone to the hospital so many times before, and they would patch him up, so to speak, and he would come home. And he’d be okay. And we’d go back to the normal routine, which did change week by week.”

Because of that pattern, Gayheart and the couple’s daughters, Billie, 16, and Georgia, 14, never expected that his February hospital admission would be different. On his third day in the hospital, the actress noticed a major change. She revealed:
“I had no idea that that was it, that that week was going to be our last week. And nor did my daughters. It really took a few days for us to understand the gravity of what that last trip to the hospital meant. I think it was like day three in the hospital where it shifted.”
The actress recalled the medical team’s tone growing somber, and even without directly mentioning it, Gayheart was realizing where things might be headed, and so was Eric. Despite his declining physical condition, Dane remained aware of what was happening. Gayheart said he continued communicating with his family and close friends, even though speaking had become difficult. She explained on TODAY:
“He was fully aware it was shifting, and he was still communicating with us. Not well verbally, but I could understand him most of the time. The kids could, most of the time, his closest friends.”
Rebecca Gayheart says Eric Dane started making choices about how he was going to leave
Gayheart remembered that the family had to navigate the situation without knowing exactly what to expect next. However, as his condition worsened, his wife and daughters wanted to make the most of the limited days they had. The actress recalled turning his hospital room into a more personal space, bringing battery-operated candles and playing his favorite music. She shared:
“The girls and I just camped out there with him, and we had our family sleepovers. We brought in those little candles that aren’t real candles. They have batteries. And we played his favorite music, and we tried to make it as nice as you can be in the hospital room.”
However, no matter how much you mentally prepare for the inevitable, it still feels unexpected when the day finally comes. Such was the case with Rebecca as well. The actress admitted that even though they had time together, she was not prepared for how quickly everything unfolded.

Gayheart and Dane fell in love after meeting on the set of Grey’s Anatomy. The couple married in 2004 and filed for divorce in 2018. However, their divorce was never finalized. In March 2025, Gayheart asked the court to dismiss the divorce proceedings, and both parties signed off on the paperwork. Although they had been separated for years and had dated other people, Gayheart said standing by Dane during his illness was never a difficult decision.
The Euphoria star reflected on their relationship in his memoir, writing that although they had grown apart and filed for divorce, they remained close, coparented their daughters, took family vacations, and spoke every day. The actor also acknowledged Gayheart in the book’s acknowledgments, writing, “I can’t thank you enough.”
Eric Dane wrote My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments while battling ALS, and he continued to write until almost the end of his life. The book was released posthumously on November 3, 2026.
