Pro Recco defeated Brescia for the third time this season, but today’s victory was more important than the previous two.

Recco beat Brescia 12:8 in the first game of the Serie A1 playoffs final (a best-of-five series).

Brescia had a chance to take the lead already in its first possession. The visitors forced a penalty shot, but Popadic didn’t convert it. Midway through the quarter, Recco netted two goals, building a 2:0 lead. Brescia got on the scoreboard only in the 7th minute. However, the visitors scored three goals in the last 70 seconds of the opening quarter, and leveled at 3:3 eight seconds before the buzzer.

At the start of the second quarter, Granados successfully converted a penalty shot, but Del Basso quickly responded with a power-play goal. After Del Basso’s equalizer, a crucial period in the game began. Recco tightened its defense and went on a 4:0 run by the end of the first quarter, heading into the second half with a significant lead of 8:4. Fondelli increased the margin to five (9:4) early in the third period.

Brescia didn’t give up and responded with three straight goals. Dolce reduced the gap to two goals by converting a man-up in the 25th minute (7:9). Recco was without a goal for more than nine minutes, but it found its rhythm in time. Recco produced a 3:0 run in 03:04 minutes and built a comfortable 12:7 lead less than four minutes before the end.

Recco will also host the second match, scheduled for Friday.
