A miserable Game 1 of the wild-card series for the Red Sox was even worse upon closer inspection.
Not only were the Red Sox 9-0 losers in the first game of the best-of-three in The Bronx, but they also lost Roman Anthony for the series — and longer if they do advance — after he sustained “additional damage” to muscles in his right wrist, Red Sox manager Chad Tracy said.
The Red Sox had submitted paperwork to MLB to enable them to remove Anthony from the roster and fill his spot. In an elimination game Wednesday, former Yankee Jahmai Jones was atop the lineup at DH against lefty Max Fried.
Anthony batted leadoff Tuesday and only took two at-bats before being lifted, having reinjured the same hand that sidelined him for nearly four months from early May to late August.
He initially suffered a partially torn tendon in a joint that connects a finger to his wrist, which he aggravated while facing Cam Schlittler.
The Red Sox sent him back to Boston after the game to get re-imaged, which found further damage to the wrist.
The second-year outfielder/designated hitter had been among the best prospects in the game and was a force after debuting last season before an injury-filled sophomore campaign.
“He’s a really good player,” Tracy said. “So, certainly not something we wanted to happen, and having him in there is important. But again, I can’t reiterate enough, we’ve dealt with things like this all year. The show goes on.”
