Do you still remember Sasha Chettri? The popular short-haired girl, who dropped on our television set after every five minutes in the Airtel 4G ad, became a star overnight after the campaign. From Kashmir to Kanyakumari, Sasha was seen on every hoarding on the street. Yes, she is the same girl who made us believe that Airtel was faster than Rajinikanth. Where is she now, and how did she become the Airtel girl?
How did Sasha Chettri turn from a copywriter into a model?
A resident of Dehradun, Uttarakhand, Sasha did her schooling in her hometown and went to Mumbai to study advertising. After graduating in advertising from Xavier’s Institute of Communications (XIC) Mumbai, Chettri became a trainee copywriter. However, while interning with Creativeland Asia, Sasha realised that copywriting was not her forte.

Instead, she decided to pursue music, writing, and singing. While she performed her gigs, Sasha also held auditions. Soon, Sasha was hired by Airtel in 2015, as the telecom brand was looking for a young, confident girl. It was Sasha’s chemistry with the camera which got her the campaign. Sasha shared that she couldn’t believe it when she first received a call from Airtel about being part of their ads. Speaking about the same, she shared:
“I did not even want to audition, because I had cut my waist-length hair very short, and I didn’t think they’d take me. Even when I was shortlisted, I thought it was a joke.”

Do you know that with the fame, Sasha faced a lot of criticism as well? She was trolled mercilessly for her repetitiveness about switching to Airtel. Ads featuring Sasha were telecast so many times on television, radio, and everywhere else, and people soon started calling her annoying. Sasha admitted that she received truckloads of hate messages as well – mostly online.

She once recalled how a troller posted, ‘Kaun se naayi se baal katwaati hai, hum uske pass kabhi nahin jayenge’. But Sasha never felt disappointed by the trolling and instead took it sportingly. Revealing how she found it amusing, Sasha shared:

“I feel bad for these people. It’s a situation they can’t avoid. It’s hilarious to see people go nuts. How else do you expect them to behave when they see my face popup during every commercial break, before every YouTube video? I tell them I feel their pain.”
On the other hand, Airtel took the trolling on a positive note, decided to capitalise on the situation, and used it in an ad campaign. Soon, Sasha was seen in another ad in Shillong, where her friends in the ad called her a ‘non-stop loudspeaker’ After a few years with the brand, she decided to quit but made a comeback in 2021 with another Airtel ad.

Sasha Chettri’s acting stint
Soon after her Airtel gig, Sasha Chettri’s popularity grew rapidly, and she soon started receiving acting offers. She made her silver-screen debut with the film, Katti-Batti but her role didn’t receive much recognition. She then made her Telugu debut with the film, Operation Gold Fish. Sasha also worked in the Prabhas and Pooja Hegde’s film, Radhe Shyam.
OYO revives Airtel girl, Sasha Chettri
After making people believe that there is no faster network than Airtel, Sasha Chettri has now become the face of OYO. The brand has revived Sasha to reinforce people’s trust in OYO’s hospitality with a new campaign for its Company-Serviced OYO hotels. In the ad, Sasha was seen using Airtel’s “test the network speed” messaging to now communicate a similar “test and verify” strategy for hotel stays.
