The Republic of Ireland were held to a 1-1 draw with Israel in Serbia after Troy Parrott’s penalty was cancelled out by Daniel Peretz’s goal early in the second half.

Played in Serbia due to security concerns, Ireland will have been frustrated not to take all three points after a particularly dominant first half, with Israel improving after the break and missing several chances of their own to grab the win.

Parrott scores again

The Republic of Ireland had made a bright start despite a subdued atmosphere in Serbia, with Adam Idah forcing a save from Assaf Tzur before Parrott curled an effort just wide.

Israel had enjoyed a spell of pressure of their own, with Caoimhin Kelleher denying Liel Abada before Ireland gradually regained control.

Jayson Molumby had gone close with a powerful effort from the edge of the box, while Ireland had also threatened from set-pieces and long throws.

Ireland had been awarded a penalty in the 39th minute after Jimmy Dunne was fouled by Dor Peretz following Parrott’s initial effort, with Parrott making no mistake from the spot.

Israel had offered little in response before the break, leaving Ireland to head into half-time with a deserved 1-0 lead.

Israel grab point

But the Irish then endured a disastrous start to the second half when Peretz levelled the game with Israel’s first shot on target, reacting quickest after Oscar Gloukh’s shot defltected off Liam Scales.

Idah then saw a chance go begging for Ireland before Gloukh delivered another warning shot with a low drive which was smothered by Kelleher.

Chiedozie Ogbene had immediately made an impact, forcing Assaf Tzur into a fine save with a fierce dipping strike, while Jake O’Brien had also seen a header blocked from a corner.

Israel had gone close to taking the lead late on, with Omri Gandleman’s low effort and Oscar Gloukh’s volley both clipping the outside of the post as the game entered an increasingly frantic final 10 minutes.
