Haveri: A 54-year-old farmer from Yadagoda village in Rattihalli taluk allegedly died by suicide. Repeated crop losses and mounting debt are said to be the reason for the extreme step.
The deceased has been identified as Maheshappa, an agriculturist. According to a complaint lodged by his wife, he had been under severe financial stress after consecutive crop failures caused by inadequate rainfall.
The wife alleged that earlier Maheshappa had borrowed Rs 3.25 lakh from a Grameena Vikas Bank for cultivation. However, poor rainfall led to crop failure, leaving him unable to recover the investment.
Hoping for a better harvest this year, he is said to have pledged gold ornaments and availed another loan of Rs 5.80 lakh from the State Bank of India branch in Rattihalli. The borrowed money was invested in cultivation, but inadequate rainfall once again caused the standing crop to wither.
According to the complaint, Maheshappa became increasingly worried that he would be unable to repay the loans. He would regularly consume alcohol. His wife stated that she and their son repeatedly tried to reassure him that the debts could be repaid over time, but he remained distressed over the financial problem.
As per the FIR Maheshappa allegedly died by suicide by hanging himself in a farmhouse on his agricultural land sometime between 11.30 pm on July 27 and 6.30 am on July 28.
In her complaint, his wife attributed the extreme step to financial distress arising from successive crop failures and mounting debt. Police have registered a case and taken up further investigation.
