Visakhapatnam city police rescued retired GST audit commissioner P. Anand Kumar, who had allegedly been kidnapped over a financial dispute in the IT SEZ area under PM Palem police station limits on Friday evening.

Police arrested 10 of the 11 accused within hours of the incident.

The arrested persons have been identified as Lingaraju Panduranga Hemanth Kumar Srinivasulu, 44, a native of Hyderabad; Deepak Vijayan, 43, from Bengaluru; Kollu Sridhar, 43, from Hyderabad; and seven others from Visakhapatnam — Mutyala Raju, K. Jagadish, R. Sai Madhav, D. Pradeep, Y. Vijaya Babu, Ch. Ranjith Kumar and K. Kiran Kumar.

Police have launched a manhunt for the absconding accused Jagadeesh.

PM Palem police inspector G. Balakrishna said Anand Kumar had served as an audit commissioner in the GST department and lived with his family in Hyderabad. He had come to Visakhapatnam on work.

The accused intercepted Anand Kumar’s car while he had been heading to the airport on Friday evening. They forcibly shifted him into their vehicle and took him to a guest house in Visalakshinagar.

Based on a complaint lodged by Singampalli Suresh, a havildar at the CGST office, police formed special teams to trace and rescue Anand Kumar. Investigators examined CCTV footage from various locations and analysed the victim’s mobile phone location before tracing Anand Kumar and the accused at a guest house in Visalakshinagar.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Anand Kumar had been involved in financial transactions with Hemanth Kumar Srinivasulu and Deepak Vijayan. Following a dispute over the dealings, Hemanth Kumar allegedly approached Kollu Sridhar, who enlisted eight others to abduct Anand Kumar and settle the dispute.

The accused confined Anand Kumar at the guest house, called his wife, and demanded immediate payment; threatening to kill him otherwise.

Police produced those arrested before the court. Further investigation is underway.
