EXCLUSIVE: Reverend And The Makers’ Jon McClure has a message for Thomas Tuchel as fans continue to belt out his tune in support of the Three Lions’ German manager at World Cup 2026
Football’s coming home again with Thomas Tuchel – or so England fans keep telling us. While Oasis’ Wonderwall has been belted out by the squad in the stadiums after each win of the tournament, an anthemic new earworm is quickly becoming a fan favourite.
Reverend and the Makers‘ Silence Is Talking has become England’s unofficial anthem of the tournament with fans chanting the lyrics “Football’s coming home again with Thomas Tuchel” to the tune of the melody.
It’s a proud moment for the band’s lead singer Jon McClure who is hoping his reworked tune can become part of history with an epic Three Lions World Cup win.
Speaking to the Mirror, Sheffield native Jon, 44, says it’s “mind blowing” to hear his song sweeping the globe 17 years on from its release. He says: “It’s a proud moment, really. To know your art can travel as far as it can, it’s just a mad thing.”
Jon – who is also part-owner of the world’s oldest football club, Sheffield FC, believes football could indeed be coming home again. He branded England’s 3-2 triumph over Mexico at the Azteca in the early hours over Monday morning a “win for the ages”.
“I’m hoping England can keep going deeper into the tournament, because I’ve got to be honest, that performance at the Azteca, we were just unbelievable. It was one for the ages”
Despite his confidence, Jon admits France could be the team to stand in our way. “I still think France are the ones to beat. But listen, we can beat anybody on our day.
“I think Tuchel’s a great manager. I think we’ve got an unbelievable group of players with Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane, so who knows. Let’s see. But I like the lads.
“I like Saka, I like Gordon, I like Bellingham, Kane’s a legend. I think we’ve got a good and very likeable squad, so I’m right behind it.”
And he held special praise for Newcastle United’s big Dan Burn. The 6ft7 Geordie centre back, 34, made his World Cup debut in the closing stages of the win over El Tri.
He cleared an impressive six chances – a World Cup record for someone entering the field of play at such a late stage. And Jon praised him for being exactly what you want from an English centre half.
“There’s memories of Bobby Moore, doing it, and Terry Butcher, and all of those. It’s like, put your head on the line, sticking his head in there. It was absolutely mega. It makes you proud of English stuff like that, doesn’t it?”
And in a message to Tuchel, Jon said he’s ready to play a special gig to rally the Three Lions, in the same way Ed Sheeran has recently.
Admitting he has had offers to head stateside if England make it to the semi-finals, Jon says: “’You know, if Thomas Tuchel does read the Mirror, then call me Thomas. I’m available.”
However, he knows that Wonderwall is the anthem of the squad, calling the song “bigger than Jesus”. He says: “Oasis are titans, aren’t they?
“But listen to be even in that conversation is wild isn’t it? Robbie Williams’ Angels, Wonderwall, and my song. I’m like ‘How did we end up there?'”
No matter what the end result this summer, Jon is hoping that music can continue to unite the world. He asks: “Let’s try to keep this spirited togetherness beyond the World Cup, because it’s a nice feeling. It’s a lot better than all being at war with one another, and arguing about religion and politics, and whatever, right?
“Everybody being together and just being in a nice place together feels good, right, and we only really have it at Christmas or World Cups, and I think we should try and take that spirit together in us forward a bit, because I think it’s a good vibe.”
