Good Morning Britain presenter Richard Madeley shed light on his experience inside one of the world’s most notorious prisons – and revealed why his actions almost jeopardised filming

Richard Madeley has revealed that he and his team were almost thrown out while filming his new show on the first day, following what he described as “a tricky” encounter with prison guards. In his latest career venture, the 70-year-old explored a high-security mega-prison in El Salvador for a new Channel 5 documentary.

With access to the entire CECOT (The Terrorism Confinement Center) site, Richard not only observed the prison conditions but also questioned the realities of life inside the notorious facility.

Reflecting on the experience, the presenter said it was “one hell of a sight” to see thousands of “shaven-headed men crammed behind floor-to-ceiling bars” with no doors and “absolutely nothing whatsoever to do”.

The Good Morning Britain host added that, in stark contrast to UK prisons, he was shocked to learn inmates are not allowed visits and are limited to just half an hour of outdoor time each day.

Keen to learn more about the conditions he described as “a living death”, Richard said prison officials were unimpressed by his questioning and claimed it almost jeopardised filming.

“It was tricky,” he told Bella Magazine. “I had to convince them we were visiting CECOT with completely open minds, but my questions about the harshness of conditions there nearly got us thrown out on day one.

“Fortunately, I managed to persuade them of the truth – I was there to report without fear or favour, or agenda.

“And my thoughts about CECOT most definitely changed the longer I was in El Salvador and the more I learned about what the gangsters imprisoned there had done to ordinary people.

“These criminal were without doubt sadistic, psychotic and psychopathic murderers and rapists.”

Sharing what shocked him most about the experience, the presenter recalled being shown a graphic video which, he claimed, the gangsters themselves had made and posted online “to terrorise the population”.

He explained: “It showed mass machete executions of helpless road workers. This ISIS beheading videos. Explicit horror.”

Furthermore, Richard said that having spoken to “people at all levels in society”, he could not pinpoint a single individual who “wasn’t overjoyed that the gangsters who brutally controlled every aspect of life in El Salvador are now permanently behind bars.

“As to the harshness of conditions in CECOT, they quietly welcome them.”

Reflecting on his experience in making the documentary, he told ITN: “I was genuinely thrilled to be asked to front this film for 5. It’s not every day you’re given the chance to step inside a place as extraordinary and talked about as CECOT. What struck me straight away was the sheer scale of it, and the stories behind it.

“In meeting the people who run the prison and those living inside it, what unfolds is a fascinating and often surprising look at justice, security and the human realities behind the headlines. It’s been a remarkable experience.”

Richard Madeley on Murder Row is set to air on Channel 5 later this year.
