Rise In Obesity, Blood Sugars Among Men, Women In TG

Hyderabad: Telangana has recorded a rise in obesity and diabetes, even as several social and child health indicators showed improvement over the years, said the latest National Family Health Survey (NFHS-6) of 2023-24. However, the incidence of hypertension has been reported to have declined. The percentage of married women experiencing spousal violence declined from 37.2 to 30.8 per cent.

Among adults, obesity levels continued to rise. Women aged 15-49 years who were overweight or obese increased from 30.1 per cent to 36.3 per cent, while overweight or obese men increased from 32.4 per cent to 35.5 per cent.

Blood sugar levels also showed a rising trend. Women with high or very high blood sugar levels or taking medicines for diabetes increased from 14.7 per cent to 19.6 per cent. Among men, the figure rose from 18.1 per cent to 24.5 per cent.

Elevated blood pressure or use of medicines for hypertension was reported among 24.2 per cent of women, from 26.1 per cent. Among men, hypertension declined from 31.4 per cent to 28.2 per cent.

The survey recorded improvements in women’s empowerment indicators. Women participating in household decisions increased from 87.2 per cent to 89.9 per cent. Women with personal bank accounts increased from 84.4 per cent to 92.3 per cent, while use of hygienic menstrual protection methods among women aged 15-24 years increased from 93.4 per cent to 95.3 per cent.

The survey further showed that internet usage witnessed major growth in the state. The percentage of women using the Internet increased from 26.5 per cent to 64.8 per cent, while among men, it rose from 50 per cent to 87.3 per cent.

The survey also highlighted improvements in child nutrition. Stunting among children under five years reduced from 33.1 per cent to 27 per cent, while underweight children declined from 31.8 per cent to 27.8 per cent. Severe wasting among children reduced from 8.5 per cent to 3.9 per cent.
