Rishabh Pant has made history by becoming the fastest Indian wicketkeeper to score 2,500 runs in Test cricket. This remarkable achievement occurred during the fourth day of India’s first Test against New Zealand at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on October 19, 2024. Pant reached this milestone in just 62 innings, surpassing the previous record held by MS Dhoni, who accomplished the feat in 69 innings, and Farokh Engineer, who did it in 82 innings.
Pant’s pivotal contribution included a brisk innings of 53 runs off 56 balls, which helped stabilize India’s position as they mounted a comeback in the match. His partnership with Sarfaraz Khan, who scored his maiden Test century, was crucial in guiding India to a strong position at 344/3 by lunch, just 12 runs behind New Zealand’s first-innings total. Pant’s performance not only highlights his aggressive batting style but also cements his status as a key player in India’s Test lineup since his debut in 2018.
