RJ Mitte’s cause of death has been revealed, according to reports, following the Breaking Bad star’s tragic suicide, aged 34, last month
Breaking Bad star RJ Mitte’s cause of death has been confirmed, it has been reported. The star died aged 34 last month and was found dead at home by his mother.
Page Six has reported that an inquest report revealed the actor died by hanging on 12 October. The publication reports that he was pronounced dead at 1.32pm.
This comes after his representative previously confirmed he had died by suicide but did not disclose any more details.
The star, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was three, was described by his publicist as a “beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate”.
Actor RJ – whose full name was Roy Frank Mitte III – rose to fame in his role as Walter ‘Flynn’ White Jr in the hit show starring Bryan Cranston as his dad, a mild-mannered teacher who becomes a crystal meth dealer after learning he has cancer.
The show ran for five series from 2008 to 2013, and Mitte used the platform the show gave him to push for more complex portrayals of characters with disabilities on screen.
Cranston, 70, said the pair had exchanged text messages in recent weeks, posting: “I’m in deep despair as I write this tonight. RJ Mitte, my sweet son on Breaking Bad has died.
“I met him when he was only 14 years old when he was cast as Walter White Jr., a part he played with such joy and enthusiasm. Born with Cerebral Palsy, he never – ever – allowed that challenge to be an excuse for anything.”
He added: “It is especially devastating to hear that he took his own life.”
Aaron Paul, 47, who played White’s drug dealer accomplice Jesse Pinkman, said in a statement: “I am at a loss. I am heartbroken over this news. RJ, I love you my friend.
“You will be missed. And to whoever happens to be reading this, please know you are loved, and you are not alone. Always remember that.”
Dean Norris, 63, who played Mitte’s character’s uncle, DEA agent Hank Schrader on Breaking Bad, said: “He was a sweetheart of a young man and will be greatly missed. This is so heartbreaking, I can’t believe it.”
Just weeks before his shock death, the star had been talking about new film projects and his future plans. On Saturday, October 10, his fiancee Kennedy Suarez celebrated her 31st birthday, and their one-year engagement anniversary was coming up, however he died days before.
Co-star Matt Jones, who played Brandon ‘Badger’ Mayhew, told how he has been planning to meet up with RJ again to see his new home in Texas, but “bailed” because he was “tired”, adding: “I’m so sorry.”
And earlier this month, RJ had been hanging out with his other Breaking Bad co-star, Luis Moncada, at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in New Mexico. In a video shared on Instagram by Moncada, the pair seemed to be in high spirits with plenty of smiles and jokes on October 4.
His final interview also gave few clues about what was to come. Indeed, the actor – who had cerebral palsy – talked about valuing life through ill-health and wanting to make the most of every second. “I live life to the fullest,” he told The Joe Vulpis Podcast in an episode released on October 5, just a week before his death. “I always try. I have a very finite amount of time.”
Talking about his future, he said he wanted to “keep living the dream”. “As long as my family is healthy and happy, I’m happy,” he added.
RJ – best known for playing Walter ‘Flynn’ White Jr in the hit series – looked to be happy and healthy when he made his last red carpet appearance on September 30 at the Fine Arts Theatre in Beverly Hills, California, to attend a screening of his new movie, Talking to Strangers.
The movie tells the tale of an introvert with cerebral palsy who strikes up an unexpected, life-changing friendship. Just four days before his death, he proudly gushed on facebook: “Had the pleasure of attending the LA premier for a film I made, Talking to Strangers The Movie, now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. It’s got a little love, some comedy, and maybe even some drama.”
