Celebrity Traitors star Rob Beckett has said he’s struggling to get into watching the World Cup this year for one sad reason, as England makes it to the knockouts

Rob Beckett has said that he is struggling to get into watching the World Cup, despite England topping the group stage to qualify for knockouts. The Celebrity Traitors star took to Instagram, admitting that there is a sad reason behind his lack of enthusiasm.

In a video filmed from his car, he said: “Don’t want to be a Debbie Downer…. Anyone struggling to get into the World Cup but can’t admit it?”

He then revealed that he did not want to watch the matches all the way through because of the late time they started: “10 o’clock start, up with the kids since 6am, may have gone to sleep and went to bed at half time. Is it just me? Don’t know what to do.”

Rob was supported by several people in the comments who felt the same way, including some celebs. Jamie Laing, who has a newborn baby, admitted: “I made it 20mins in”

Meanwhile, Harry Judd said he didn’t even watch the England vs Panama game, in which England won, qualifying for knockouts: “Up at 5:30 with the kids. Didn’t even make it to kick off.” Traitors star Paul Gorton agreed: “Yeah I’m out, see ya in 2030”

In previous tournaments, Rob has been one of the most vocal celebrity champions of the England squad and even left his wife and kids on a family holiday to watch them play in the Euros in 2024

But, some other celebs felt the solution to Rob’s problem was to start listening to those who were really into the World Cup, so that the comedian might absorb some of the enthusiasm. Booby Kootstra, who is in a relationship with Rob’s fellow comedian Katherine Ryan, said: “You need a little bit of @lloydgriffith”

Lloyd Griffith is one of the co-hosts of BBC Sounds’ Rick & Lloyd’s Guide to the World Cup. The podcast is produced by Radio 5Live’s Football Daily, and Lloyd and Rick Edwards cover the World Cup from their base in Los Angeles. The podcast has been praised for its frank, funny and passionate takes on the World Cup.

Comedian Lloyd will be familiar to many TV fans as he played one of the reporters in Ted’s press conferences, and Detective Senior Constable Colin Cartwright in Death in Paradise spin-off, Return to Paradise. Lloyd himself responded to Rob’s post and told the comedian to get over to LA: “Get over here mate. I’m balls deep in Budweiser and beef tacos.”

Rob has made a name for himself as a comedian and through his shows with Romesh Ranganathan. The two will both be in the second series of Celebrity Traitors, alongside huge names including Richard E Grant, Maya Jama and Julie Hesmondhalgh.

Rob and Julie were both seen running outside the castle during filming. Rob appeared to have started his run for exercise, as he was dressed in a blue running top, black shorts and white and neon yellow trainers. His minder ran beside him but the grinning comedian was powering ahead.

Julie’s run seemed less planned. The former Corrie actress was in an oversized orange jumper, black trousers and heavy boots when she broke into a run, leaving her minder, who was left smiling by Julie’s antics, surprised and chasing after her.
