Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds’ extremely public bromance has reached its final form: brand-partnered birthday videos with all the humor and authenticity of a Mint Mobile commercial.
Ever since Mac and Reynolds made their joint purchase of the Welsh football team Wrexham A.F.C. in 2021, fans of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia have complained that the series creator’s public persona is shifting away from “punk-rock sitcom king” to something much closer to, well, Reynolds. The chiseled, clean-cut and recently rebranded Mac of 2025 is nearly unrecognizable from the hirsute boundary-pusher who once put on put on 60 pounds just for the “Fat Mac” arc, and, as if his recent name change wasn’t enough, Mac’s shamelessly commercialized birthday message for Reynolds has all but completed his Deadpoolification.
Earlier today, Mac posted his obligatory birthday video for Reynolds in conjunction with Wrexham A.F.C., his own company More Better Industries and the meditation software company Calm. Thanks to the lattermost corporate sponsor, this year’s best wishes came in the form of an ASMR video featuring a cameo from Hugh Jackman and a link in Mac’s bio for more exciting offerings from Calm.
Don’t Miss
When Mac turns 49 in April, Reynolds should have no problem securing a DeWalt partnership so that anyone who has to watch this crap can put a 20V MAX Cordless Drill/Driver to their temple.
When Mac and Reynolds first started swapping viral videos on each other’s birthday in 2023, fans of the duo found Reynolds’ high-production-value music video explaining how to pronounce Mac’s former surname to be novel, charming and heartfelt. Since then, it’s been a biannual tradition for the two friends and business partners to profess their platonic love for one another in humorous video posts. But, inevitably, someone had to ruin the last shred of earnestness left in the pair’s incessantly public friendship by turning the running joke into yet another revenue stream.
Sadly, that someone was Mac, who has somehow surpassed Reynolds in becoming a hyper-sanitized, hyper-monetized business entity in the shape of a human being who spews out Disney-channel-level snark in soft lighting. Mac has morphed a once-endearing tradition into soulless marketing slop, and as bad as Instagram version of Calm’s Rob Mac™ birthday promotion may be, it’s still not nearly as shameless as the extended version that Mac recorded for the official Calm YouTube channel:
So not only did Mac turn his annual birthday video for Reynolds into a literal commercial, but he also managed to shoehorn in product placement for both his and Reynolds’ celebrity booze brands. By hawking Aviation Gin and Four Walls Whiskey in the Calm product demonstration, Mac has somehow put a hat on the hat of selling out — and he couldn’t even do the Always Sunny fandom a single solid and give a shout-out to Fight Milk.
