Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo has sent a touching message to a boy in Venezuela named Andres Mieles, who lost his family and one of his legs in the devastating earthquakes that struck the country.
Ronaldo sent words of encouragement to Andres and also invited the boy to meet him. “I want you to attend one of my games,” Ronaldo said in the video message.
Two back-to-back earthquakes struck Venezuela on June 25. According to figures released on Friday, the tremors, measuring 7.1 and 7.5 in magnitude, left 2,645 people dead and 12,600 injured.
Ronaldo’s Portugal have reached the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after a 2-1 win over Croatia in the Round of 32. In the knockout match, Ronaldo broke two records, becoming the oldest player to feature in a FIFA World Cup knockout-stage match.
At 41 years and 147 days old, Ronaldo also became the oldest player to score in a FIFA World Cup knockout-stage match. He converted a penalty in the 68th minute to equalise for Portugal against Croatia in their Round of 32 clash. The goal also marked Ronaldo’s first-ever strike in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup.
They will face Spain for a place in the quarterfinals. It is unknown if the boy will attend Portugal’s Last 16 match.
