Hyderabad: The long-pending Hyderabad Regional Ring Road (RRR) northern segment project construction works are likely to begin in August. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) issued tender notifications for the construction of a 161-km six-lane access-controlled greenfield highway. The bids have to be submitted online by July 7. The works are expected to commence in August after the tender finalisation process, and the northern segment of the RRR is expected to become operational by the end of 2029.
The technical bids will be opened on July 8. According to the notification, the works will be executed on a Design, Build, Operate and Transfer (DBOT) or Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) basis. The selected contractors will have to complete the works within three years from the date of issue of the Letter of Agreement.
The notification says the northern RRR corridor will include 44 major bridges, 127 minor bridges, four road-over-bridges, 44 underpasses, 1,262 culverts and nine toll plazas. The expressway will also connect with National Highways and State Highways at nine locations, improving regional connectivity around Hyderabad.
The NHAI has decided to execute the project in two packages instead of the earlier proposal of five packages. The 161.518-km Expressway from Girmapur in Sangareddy district to Tangadpally in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district will be developed at an estimated civil construction cost of Rs 9,362.4 crore.
Under Package-1, works will be taken up from Girmapur in Sangareddy district to Pragnapur in Siddipet district for a stretch of 83.518 km at an estimated cost of `4,918.71 crore. The Package-2 will cover the 78-km stretch from Pragnapur to Tangadpally in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district at an estimated cost of `4,443 crore.
The northern part of the RRR project had witnessed repeated delays over the past two years. In the last week of November 2025, the NHAI had floated tenders for the second time by dividing the project into five packages.
However, not a single bid was received as the required documentation was not uploaded online during the tendering process. Subsequently, in February 2026, the NHAI decided to reduce the number of packages from five to two. In the same month, the highway was officially assigned the number NH-161AA.
Land acquisition for the project is progressing rapidly. Authorities have acquired 927 hectares for Package-1 and 886 hectares for Package-2. Awards have already been announced for more than 70 per cent of the acquired land, while the remaining cases are in different stages of progress.
