Hyderabad: A 49-year-old man from Qutbiguda was allegedly duped of more than Rs 7.9 lakh by cyber fraudsters who lured him with a promise of Rs 45 lakh in exchange for an old Rs 1 currency note.
According to police, the victim came across a social media advertisement on September 20 claiming that an old Indian one-rupee note could be sold for Rs 45 lakh. He contacted the phone number provided in the advertisement.
The fraudsters asked him to send photographs of the currency note along with his personal details, claiming that the information was required to transfer the money. Believing their claims, the victim shared the requested details.
The fraudsters later demanded money from him, claiming that the promised amount had been frozen and that he needed to pay taxes and obtain RBI clearances before the money could be released into his account.
The fraudsters later allegedly posed as a DSP from the Andhra Pradesh Cybercrime Police and accused the victim of being involved in the sale of black money. They continued demanding money from him.
Between September 20 and 23, the victim transferred more than Rs 7.9 lakh to the fraudsters in multiple transactions. When they demanded more money, he realised that he had been cheated and approached the police.
Police registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident.
