Vijayawada: State government will train rural self-help group (SHG) women as home aides and geriatric caregivers to help them secure dignified employment and a steady income in their native villages or nearby areas, Rural Poverty Alleviation minister Kondapalli Srinivas said on Friday.

In this regard, he announced that the government is launching a special training programme “Home Aaya – Geriatric Care Taker” through the Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP) to expand employment opportunities for SHG women in the rapidly growing care economy.

The minister said the initiative is aimed at reducing migration among rural women by creating livelihood opportunities close to their homes. The training will be free of cost, along with accommodation, through Rural Self-Employment Training Institutes (RSETIs).

The programme will equip women with skills to care of senior citizens and bedridden patients. The curriculum will cover personal hygiene, first aid, and communication skills. There will be practical training to prepare participants for caregiving responsibilities.

As part of the programme, trainees will visit old-age homes, nursing homes, and childcare centres to gain field-level exposure and better understand care services and their requirements.

The minister said in addition, the programme would familiarise women with banking services, digital transactions, and financial management, enabling them to handle their earnings and finances more effectively. He directed District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) project directors to identify interested SHG women in their respective districts and arrange their training through RSETIs.

Srinivas said the “Home Aaya – Geriatric Care Taker” programme will be implemented on a wider scale during the 2026–27 financial year. He asked rural women to make use of the opportunity to enhance their skills, achieve financial independence, and move towards self-reliance.
