Russell Henley won the Charles Schwab Challenge this weekend with a six-year-old Titleist TSi3 driver and 3-wood, which is noteworthy because he won last year at the Arnold Palmer Invitational with the newer GT3 models.
But Henley wouldn’t have been able to play a TSi3 7-wood like he did this week because no such option existed.
Instead, two weeks ago at the PGA Championship, Henley was fitted into the new Titleist GTS3 7-wood.
Seeing the growing trend toward high-lofted fairway woods on the PGA Tour, the GTS3 is the first Titleist “3” fairway wood option to be offered in the 7-wood loft. Previously, only the larger “2” and “1” models offered the 7-wood loft.
Henley previously played a 21-degree hybrid in that spot but worked with Titleist senior director of club promotion, JJ Van Wezenbeeck, at Aronimink to dial in the new 7-wood to get an improved peak height and a 235-yard carry number.
GTS fairway woods feature a silver face, which help players see more loft at address. Most players respond by covering the ball better. Henley’s 7-wood ended up being set up in the C4 SureFit hosel position, which adds another degree of loft and makes the club one degree flatter.

The extra loft was probably a result of Henley covering the ball better and needing a touch more loft to get the ball to his optimal peak height. He also went with a half-inch shorter Project X Denali Black 80 TX shaft.
Henley is the second player to win with a GTS3 7-wood in the bag, after Cameron Young won at the Cadillac Championship with the new club after adding it at the Masters.
