Eduard Sandler, the president and head coach of Russian basketball club Dynamo Vladivostok, died in a jet ski accident on July 28 in Vladivostok.
The team released a statement following Sandler’s passing.
“Eduard Mikhailovich Sandler has passed away,” the statement read, per The Sun. “This is an irreplaceable loss for the entire sports community of the Primorsky Krai region and for Russian basketball. Eduard Mikhailovich dedicated his life to the development of the sport, the nurturing of players, and the building of a strong system.
The statement continued, “Thanks to his energy, character, and commitment, Dynamo achieved great success and significant victories. All who knew Eduard Mikhailovich will remember him as a man who loved basketball and the Primorsky Krai region with all his heart. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, friends, colleagues, and all who share this profound loss.”
Sandler, who was just 44 years old, reportedly lost control of a jet ski at a harbor near Burny Business Centre in Vladivostok.
The jet ski struck a stone embankment before overturning.
According to reports coming out of Europe, he suffered severe injuries after crashing into rocks, and despite the emergency services being called, Sandler was pronounced dead before the arrival of an ambulance.
Earlier this summer, Dynamo Vladivostok secured admission into the VTB United League, Russia’s top professional basketball competition, where they will play during the 2026-27 season.
The promotion represented one of Sandler’s biggest accomplishments after the team had established themselves in the Russian Super League, the second-tier basketball league in the country.
Before joining Dynamo, Sandler coached several other Russian clubs, including Spartak Primorye, Sakhalin and Vostok-65.
