Rylan Clark has explained to Alan Carr why he had to miss an edition of his BBC Radio 2 show and how it was partly his own fault as well as someone elses

BBC Radio 2 host Rylan Clark has complained about his salary at the BBC after he had to miss a show because of a travel disaster. Rylan, 37, has been presenting on BBC Radio 2 since 2019, alongside other media commitments.

However, earlier this year, he wasn’t able to present one of his programmes after he attempted to fly home from holiday on a morning he was due to work. He made the confession while speaking to Celebrity Traitors season one winner Alan Carr on his podcast.

Speaking on the comedian’s Life’s A Beach podcast for the first time since 2022, Rylan said: “I was stranded in Nice, ain’t it terrible? What a terrible place to be stranded, in the south of France.

“It was terrible. It was my own fault, like, radio have had a right go because, me being me, I was like, ‘I’ll just fly home on the morning of my show.’”

Rylan then proceeded to have a go at the BBC over his salary as he quipped: “Weren’t my fault there was a French air traffic control strike. What am I supposed to do? Walk? P*** off for the money they pay me. Thank you licence payers.”

This isn’t the first time emotions have taken off in relation to former X Factor contestant Rylan’s radio show. Having taken some time off to film Dating Naked UK for Channel 4, Rylan returned to the airwaves at the start of this month.

Presenting his show alongside Sally Boazman and Professor Green, Rylan sounded pleased to be back at work for the broadcaster. He announced: “I’m back!”

Once Rylan had thanked Owain Wyn Evans for covering for him for the two weeks he was away, he resumed his usual banter with traffic reporter Sally.

Following this, he once again took a dig at BBC bosses after joking about the BBC’s rules, which do not allow free advertising, during a discussion about different types of AI. In response, Sally replied: “You’re back and you’re already causing trouble.”

The discussion came after Rylan talked about a game called Rylexa, reportedly inspired by Amazon’s Alexa.

He said: “I’ve been creating a new artificial intelligence machine called Rylexa. I’m looking for people to buy shares in it. If you want, we can talk after the show.”

In response, and aware of the BBC’s guidelines, Professor Green said: “Sure. There are other AI platforms that you can invest in, isn’t that what you’ve got to say on the BBC?” However, Rylan jokingly replied: “But they’re not Rylexa! Who cares? Sack me!”
