Rylan Clark says he gets ‘quite protective’ as he defended one of his Radio 2 co-stars from a ‘nasty’ backlash from a listener

Rylan Clark issued a stern warning to listeners as he defended a BBC Radio 2 colleague. Rylan, 37, has been presenting the radio station’s Saturday afternoon slot since 2019.

On his show he regularly interacts with traffic presenter Sally Boazman and assistant producer Lotte Uttley. During his latest show, Rylan revealed a listener left a “charming” message critiquing Sally.

It prompted the presenter to hit back at the listener. He said: “You played me a very lovely message earlier from someone who had called up on the travel line…”

To which Sally replied: “Oh yes, it was charming.” After being asked if the caller left their details, she continued: “No, because people who leave those kind of messages don’t leave their name.”

Defending his colleague, Rylan said: “I’m just going to say this now. I am the only person who is allowed to take the mick out of Sally.

“I am the only person that is allowed to talk to Sally like that, because she knows it is in jest. If you think you can call that travel line and speak to Sally like I have just heard you speak to her.

“A woman of her expertise, a woman of her age, a woman of her knowledge at what she does, I’ve got your number, and I’m telling you now, I will call you back personally on air, and believe me, it won’t go down well for you sir.

“So to the lovely gentleman who decided to call Sally with a barrage of abuse, we’ve got your number and I will find you.”

Rylan went on to say he is “very protective” of his on-air colleagues. He added: “I’m up for a joke, you know me, but that was nasty.”

Sally explained she often likes to answer nasty messages. She added: “I feel very safe around you.”

Rylan joked: “When’s it’s not a nasty message for me, I will go them. I’ll fight for you Sal, I’ll fight for you. I’ll scalp them.”

Rylan, who rose to fame on X Factor before entering the Celebrity Big Brother House just weeks after his elimination, says he used to read negative comments he received online. But he concluded that by responding, he was giving the critics “what they wanted”.
