After a series of upheavals and changes in Salman Khan’s Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace over the past few months, including the deletion of all anti-China references, the film may now give theatres a miss and go straight to OTT.
A close friend of the superstar-producer says, “Salman has offers from several major platforms to take his film directly to digital. This route would minimise the heavy losses that he has suffered due to the re-shooting of Maatrubhumi. It is a possibility that Salman is considering very seriously, although at the moment he doesn’t want make it public, as a Salman starrer going directly to digital seems like a climbdown.”
A-listers in Bollywood still seem to see OTT as the lesser option compared with theatre release. Alia Bhatt is fighting with her producers to not release Alpha on the OTT platform.
Maatrubhumi seems to be a casualty of political considerations, rather than an indication of decline in Salman’s stardom. Since it has undergone multiple reshoots and editing rounds, distributors and exhibitors in the theatre arena are wary of touching the film, while no major OTT platform is willing to consider it for streaming after release in cinemas.
If Salman does choose the direct digital route for Maatrubhumi, it won’t be the first time. His Radhe went directly to OTT in 2021
