Samantha Ruth Prabhu: “I would love to disappear for a few months and live in nature”

The last time I saw Samantha Ruth Prabhu, she was all flat stomach, prominent deltoids and tight glutes. We were working out together at Breathe Studio in Khar, the Eega star trouncing me during every rep—not that I had any intention of competing with her. Four years into living with myositis, an autoimmune disease that causes muscle inflammation and makes movement painful, it makes sense that Samantha takes her body seriously. She trains harder than most of us, she eats healthier than most of us, she scores better mindfulness points than most of us. And her body is thankful for it because now, beyond the physical perfection that her career demands and the mental fortitude of dealing with a disease that strikes without warning, it has to work overtime to make space for the child growing in her belly.

During a conference held on June 24 to celebrate the release of her latest film, Maa Inti Bangaaram, Samantha said, “I know I have to take maternity leave now, but I’m very, very happy to go…,” before the audience erupted into cheers upon receiving confirmation about the pregnancy rumours that had been making the rounds online, not allowing the actor to complete her sentence. The glowing mum-to-be smiled and took a small bow to convey her gratitude, while her husband Raj Nidimoru, seated beside her, simply looked out into the audience, warmed by their reaction but also guarded about their life together, as he has always been. When I had spoken to her for Vogue India’s March-April 2026 cover story, Samantha had said about her husband, “With my health, there were times in our friendship where I didn’t believe in myself and Raj did the trusting for me. He never ever let me fall. And when you see each other through such pain and hardship, that is a bond that cannot be broken, right?”
