The horrific Rapthadu school incident in Andhra Pradesh has sent shock waves across the country, triggering widespread concern over children’s safety, law and order and the growing violence against women and children. The incident has also reignited the debate over whether films influence violent behaviour in society.
Once again, filmmaker Sandeep Reddy has been dragged into the controversy, with critics questioning his portrayal of aggressive and violent male characters on screen and alleging that such films have a negative influence on society. His last release Animal was brought into the conversation and netizens reminded the scene where Ranbir Kapoor walks into a class room with a Ak 47 gun.
Reacting strongly to the criticism, Sandeep Reddy took to social media and lashed out at those using the tragedy to target filmmakers. “When someone commits a heinous crime, the first response should be empathy and an attempt to understand the larger problem, not finding a convenient scapegoat in cinema. It is becoming increasingly clear that your concern is not for the victims or their families, but that you are using a horrific tragedy as a dirty excuse to settle your personal scores,” he wrote.
He also took a dig at certain actors, directors and producers, accusing them of suddenly projecting themselves as social reformers whenever an opportunity arises to criticise someone else’s work. “A tragedy deserves empathy, not opportunism. Learn the difference,” he added.
