Three years after Sarpatta Parambarai Round 2 was first announced, the much-awaited project has finally begun. Actor Arya took to X on Monday to share a new poster featuring a boxing ring, announcing that the film has officially commenced. Pa Ranjith, who directed the acclaimed first instalment, is returning to helm the project.
Sharing the poster, Arya wrote, “The origin of Sarpatta Parambarai begins.” He also tagged Pa Ranjith and, interestingly, actress Sayyeshaa, his wife. The post marks the first major update on the film after a prolonged period of silence surrounding its development.
The announcement comes shortly after Ranjith completed work on Vettuvam, which is gearing up for release later this year. Sarpatta Parambarai Round 2 has now gone on floors, bringing the filmmaker and Arya back to the world of North Chennai boxing.
Pa Ranjith had earlier teased a political drama
When Ranjith spoke about the project in 2025, he deliberately kept its timeline under wraps. “I can’t reveal if it is a sequel or a prequel. But the era of the film is interesting. I am planning to make it a political drama. Having said that, the story will also have the elements that people loved in the first part, such as the boxing scenes and other characterisations.”
With Arya’s latest post describing the film as the “origin” of Sarpatta Parambarai, the project now appears to be a prequel rather than a continuation of Kabilan’s story. The film is expected to explore an earlier period in the history of the boxing community, with the social and political backdrop of the time playing an important role.
However, the makers have not yet revealed the exact period in which the story is set or how it connects to the characters and events of the 2021 film. The rest of the cast and the technical crew are also yet to be officially announced.
Arya’s return, however, is now confirmed. His presence raises questions about the nature of his role in the prequel, particularly given that the first film established Kabilan as its central character.
Sarpatta Parambarai’s world expands
Released in 2021, Sarpatta Parambarai was a period sports drama set against the boxing culture of North Chennai. The film centred on the longstanding rivalry between the Sarpatta Parambarai and Idiyappa Parambarai, while using the sport as a gateway to explore community, politics, identity and social change.
The film was originally expected to have a theatrical release but premiered directly on Prime Video during the COVID-19 pandemic, when restrictions had severely affected theatrical exhibition. Despite bypassing cinemas, it received widespread critical acclaim and strong audience appreciation, with its characters, boxing sequences and recreation of North Chennai becoming major talking points.
The sequel was officially announced in 2023, but its progress was delayed as Ranjith continued work on Vettuvam. The filmmaker had previously confirmed that the script was being developed as a political drama while retaining the boxing and character-driven elements that audiences connected with in the first film.
Now, with Round 2 officially underway, the focus will turn to how Ranjith expands the Sarpatta universe and takes its story further back in time. More details about the cast, period setting, plot and release plans are expected to emerge as production progresses.
