Extreme heat is expected at the end of this week, especially in North Rhine-Westphalia and the southwest. Here’s a look at the weather in Germany, from the eclipse on Wednesday evening through to the weekend.
Another heat wave is rolling towards Germany with temperatures of up to 39C possible in places by Friday, according to the German Weather Service (DWD).

The weather on Wednesday was expected to be mostly sunny and dry: Ideal conditions for gazing at a celestial event.
This is good news for millions of people across Germany who plan to step outside to witness a solar eclipse, which will be visible across the country starting from around 7:15 pm and lasting until close to sunset.
Scattered clouds can be expected in parts of the north and northeast. Overnight to Thursday is set to remain mostly clear with partly cloudy skies in places.
Again, the clear night sky with light winds should make for decent stargazing conditions — ideal for anyone planning to take a gander at the Perseid meteor shower, which reaches its peak intensity on Wednesday night.
Temperatures on Wednesday will range from 20 to 26C in the north, and from 26 to 35C elsewhere, with the hottest weather felt in the southwest.
At night temperatures will drop to around 19C in metropolitan areas and at mid-elevations in the west and southwest. But in the central and eastern parts of the country it will get colder, as low as 8C in places, so bundle up if you’re going out stargazing in these areas.
On Thursday the next heatwave begins in earnest, especially in the North Rhine-Westphalia and the southwest where temperatures will rise to around 37C. A weather report by Bild, put it this way: “Sauna temperatures are approaching.”
In parts of Germany, as well as in neighbouring France, the coming hot weather marks the fifth heatwave so far this summer. Human caused climate change is pushing temperatures up overall on average, while temporal weather patterns including El Niño are also contributing to a particularly hot summer for Europe.

In the northeast and Berlin temperatures will reach around 27C on Thursday, while the northern coasts, facing onshore winds, will remain slightly cooler.
Western Germany’s metropolitan areas will experience a ‘tropical night’ on Thursday night to Friday, with temperatures hovering around 21C.
Elsewhere it will cool off a bit overnight. Berlin can expect night time temperatures to drop to 15C and in south-eastern Bavaria the mercury will drop down to 10C.
Friday is predicted to be the hottest day of the week. The temperature will then be 29 to 39C, with only the northern coasts set to remain cooler.
In the west and southwest, scattered thunderstorms are expected.
This pattern of warm weather and scattered storms is expected to extend into the weekend, although daily highs are expected to drop slightly. Scattered storms may bring locally severe weather in places, including heavy rain and hail.
