In a recent conversation with Jenna Bush Hager on the TODAY show, Savannah Guthrie opened up about how she has been balancing her return to work with the daily anguish over her mom, Nancy’s disappearance. Savannah got teary-eyed in the fourth hour of TODAY, June 8, 2026, show. She mentioned that it has been really tough for her. Savannah stated that she has been trying her best to hold it together. She was quoted as saying:
“It’s really hard to come back. I’ve been trying so hard to hold it together, and I promise I will. I’m happy to be back. It’s like the two hours of my day — it’s not that I’m not thinking about it, because I am — but it’s something to do. It brings me a lot of joy to be with everybody. But no, it’s not easy.”

During the same conversation, Savannah got candid about her emotional turmoil as she tried to be hopeful about her mom, Nancy’s return. She added a line from the Bible that she found in a book of old sermons, which gave her solace. Savannah shared that while she is continuing her daily work, every morning on the way to work and on the way home, she can’t help but cry. In her words:
“We still need everybody’s prayers. We still wish somebody would call and say what they know. There’s a part of it which says, ‘You’ll walk and not grow faint.’And this sermon that I read talked about that. How there’s a time in life when just walking and not growing faint is about as good as it can get. And that’s what I feel like I’m doing. I’m trying to walk and not grow faint, and it’s a gift from God that I’m able to do so. But it’s always with me. I cry every morning on the way to work, and I cry every morning on the way home.”

During the same conversation, Jenna expressed her hope that being on the TODAY show might have helped Savannah in some way in these difficult times. In response, Savannah said that the show has given her a brief break from grief. Savannah added that if she had another kind of job, she didn’t think of returning to work so soon. She recalled what Nancy would have said in these difficult times. She was quoted as saying:
“It is. It’s a little respite. And you are my family. I don’t think if I had any other kind of job, I would’ve even tried to come back. I just felt like, what else should I do? And my mom would’ve said the same like, ‘Honey, just keep going, just keep going.’ And so, I am.”
