Hyderabad: The Supreme Court on Monday asked 14 non-consenting states, including Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, to revisit their decision on enhancing the retirement age of judicial officers to 62 years. Retirement age for judicial offers in both the Telugu states is 61.

A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohana expressed satisfaction over 14 states agreeing to raise the retirement age of judicial officers from 60 to 62 years.

The bench said the issue had to be addressed collectively by the Supreme Court and the state governments, rather than through separate petitions by individual judicial officers.

It, however, refused to entertain requests for urgent listing of individual pleas filed by judicial officers nearing retirement or those who had recently retired. Senior advocate Ranjit Kumar, representing the petitioner, mentioned one such plea for urgent listing, pointing out that judicial officers were retiring every day.

On September 4, the Supreme Court had directed the states that agreed to the proposal to amend their service rules to raise the retirement age of judicial officers to 62 years, subject to an assessment of their suitability by the respective High Courts. The amendments were to be carried out preferably within two months.
