Vijayapura: Bijapur City MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal on Tuesday warned the Karnataka government of protests both inside and outside the legislature if it fails to scrap the proposed Bidadi Township, Sharavathi Pumped Storage and Anekal cricket stadium projects at the forthcoming Cabinet meeting.

Describing the Bidadi Township project as a “death warrant for farmers” and the Sharavathi Pumped Storage project as a threat to the ecologically sensitive Western Ghats, Yatnal accused the Congress government of sacrificing farmers’ interests to benefit real estate and influential capitalist interests.

“It is condemnable that the government, having surrendered to pressure from the real estate lobby and capitalist interests, is forcibly acquiring farmers’ lands. Farmers in Bidadi are prosperous and cultivate a variety of crops including silk, mango, arecanut, banana, vegetables, jackfruit and guava. The government’s move to acquire nearly 6,500 acres of highly fertile and irrigated agricultural land for residential purposes is irrational,” Yatnal said.

Accusing the government of yielding to vested interests, Yatnal said the decision to earmark fertile farmland for housing projects and urban development reflected a lack of long-term planning and vision.
