Scratching the stats

“I completed the census (C8) but don’t understand why there wasn’t a question about ‘fur babies’,” writes Natasha Lee of Alexandria. “Many of us consider our pets to be an important part of the family. The presence of pets paints a more detailed picture of our households, so why are they excluded?”

Here’s hoping Alan Phillips of Mosman doesn’t commit a capital offence: “My wife and I had planned to be in Canberra this week for some walking, cycling and galleries. Checking the weather predictions — freezing temperatures and rain — made us decide to postpone. But shock horror! We’d already filled in our census online which said we would be there. We were now stuck with it or risk possible arrest and imprisonment for lying to the Commonwealth.”

Sticking with the statistics, George Manojlovic of Mangerton says, “Obviously Jack Dikian finds crunching the numbers enlightening. He must have woken Tuesday morning and thought, ‘At last! I’ve finally come to my census!’”

“I believe the Wests Tigers approached the Pope (C8) to play five-eighth next year,” reports Peter Miniutti of Ashbury. “He respectfully declined the offer giving the excuse that not even God could save them.”

Regarding Nola Tucker’s opera (C8) commentary, John Boddington of Dalton reckons “there is really only one plot in opera. According to the comedian Ed Gardner: ‘Opera is when a guy gets stabbed in the back and, instead of bleeding, he sings’.”

“Actually, I’ve found that not knowing the plot is mandatory in order to enjoy the opera,” adds Andrew Taubman of Queens Park. “To the extent that is possible, that is.”

Time for How to Identify a Lying Politician with your host Peter Sweeney of Balmain: “If a politician is asked a simple question that they have no intention of answering, their response will always start with the word ‘look’. They use this tactic because they are looking to avoid answering the simple question because they can’t.”

Fellow Tigertowner Alicia Dawson says, “please don’t encourage the Perrottet family to broaden their political aspirations, Brian Harris (C8). I have a sneaking suspicion that they already regard themselves as Australia’s wannabe answer to the Kennedy clan.”

Rhoda Silber of Manly has news from our friend, brother Gus, in Johannesburg: “Snow predicted this week! The first time we ever saw snow was in September 1981 in Johannesburg. Wonder if any of my fellow C8-ers can recall their first sighting?”
