Vijayawada:With the second spell of hike in petrol and diesel prices by around 96 paise and 94 paise respectively per litre in less than a week, the people are more worried that this practice may be continued and raise the prices of essential commodities.
Every price hike in fuels adds to transportation costs and raises the prices of all commodities across the board.
Oil marketing companies have announced the hike in price of petrol and diesel on Tuesday after jacking up the rates by Rs 3.29 for petrol and Rs 3.14 for diesel per litre on May 15. With this, petrol costs Rs 113.36 and diesel Rs 101.09 per litre here.
Sources privy to the developments in the OMCs say that they may enhance the price of both petrol and diesel periodically, not in one go, so as to note invite the wrath of the people. Put together, a raise of upto Rs 15 per litre is likely in the coming weeks.
Moreover, some OMCs like HPCL are not supplying fuels to the petroleum traders, citing insufficient funds despite having made the payment in their account and also “non-availability” of oil tankers for transport.
Meanwhile, Rythu Bazar authorities say that the rise in fuel prices may not be having any major impact on the price of vegetables that are available locally. However, the prices of vegetables like carrot and beetroot coming here from Hyderabad and Bengaluru, potatoes from Maharashtra and beans and capsicum from other states will go up due to the increase in their transportation costs.
The president of the federation of AP chamber of commerce and industry, P Bhaskar, said, “If the price of diesel is raised further it will have a major impact on the industrial and transport sectors and many units may turn unviable. The Centre has to step in and come to their rescue to help them sustain.”
The AP lorry owners association general secretary Y Eeswara Rao said, “OMCs failed to reduce the cost of gas and fuels when the rupee rate fell against dollar. It is time, the Centre reduced some taxes and provide relief to the commoners.”
