Donald Trump played the hits this weekend, scratching and spinning his usual ALL-CAPS COMPLAINTS about late-night comedians: No talent, low ratings, not funny. But this time his ire wasn’t aimed at Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert or even Jimmy Fallon — often-ignored Seth Meyers is the latest to get the royal treatment from the President.
“Seth Meyers of NBC may be the least talented person to ‘perform’ live in the history of television. In fact, he may be the WORST to perform, live or otherwise,” Trump posted on Truth Social, apparently unaware that Meyers tapes his shows in the afternoon. “I watched his show the other night for the first time in years. In it he talked endlessly about electric catapults on aircraft carriers which I complain about as not being as good as much less expensive steam catapults. On and on he went, a truly deranged lunatic. Why does NBC waste its time and money on a guy like this??? – NO TALENT, NO RATINGS, 100% ANTI TRUMP, WHICH IS PROBABLY ILLEGAL!!!”
Nothing illegal about politician jokes — not yet, anyway — but that didn’t stop Trump’s tantrum. Ironically, one of the subjects of Meyers’ jokes that night was about Chuck Schumer. The Senate minority leader had criticized Trump’s recent trip to Asia, a negative assessment that the President labeled “almost treasonous.”
Don’t Miss
Maybe that’s part of Trump’s strategy — when he can’t credibly accuse his critics of sedition or breaking the law, those actions are “probably” illegal or “almost” treasonous. The mud is slung without needing to back up the almost-but-not-quite accusations. The online beef would be easy to laugh off if 2025 hadn’t shown us that late-night comics like Colbert and Kimmel are vulnerable to the whims of the administration.
As always, Trump criticism is good for business. The offending “A Closer Look” segment has more than one million YouTube views, a success enjoyed by other Meyers clips that discuss the President’s foibles. By comparison, interviews with Reese Witherspoon and Judd Apatow can’t reach 100,000 combined views.
Watch for yourself and see Meyers take on Trump’s steam-powered catapults, with the President’s meandering comments nearly as funny as Meyers’s punchlines. “They’re spending billions of dollars to build stupid electric,” Trump griped aboard the USS George Washington. “When it breaks, you have to send it up to MIT, get the most brilliant people in the world, fly them out. It’s ridiculous. The steam — they said they can fix it with a hammer and a blowtorch. And it works just as well, if not better. And I love the sight of that beautiful steam pouring off the deck.”
“Guy spends more time thinking about catapults than Wile E. Coyote,” joked Meyers. “Next, he’s going to start complaining about how our troops don’t tie themselves to rockets anymore.”
Somehow, Meyers anticipated Trump’s angry response to the segment. “Trump thinks if you say something mean about him, that’s treason. Which is why on this show, I only do constructive criticism,” Meyers said.
“Which, I’m being told, is also treason.”
