Kolkata: Union home minister Amit Shah will arrive in West Bengal on Thursday to oversee the selection of the chief minister for the BJP’s first government in the state, ahead of the swearing-in ceremony scheduled at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata on May 9.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the ceremony along with Amit Shah. The event coincides with Pochishe Boishakh, the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.
Amit Shah, along with Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, has been appointed as central observer for the election of the BJP legislative party leader. They are scheduled to meet all 207 BJP MLAs-elect in Kolkata.
Among the contenders for the chief minister’s post is Suvendu Adhikari, who defeated Trinamul Congress chief Mamata Banerjee in Bhowanipore while retaining his Nandigram seat. Other names in consideration include Dilip Ghosh and Swapan Dasgupta.
Suvendu Adhikari said, “I will convey my wish to my top leaders and will do what they will ask me to do. But I will keep doing my bit for both the seats.”
Meanwhile, state BJP president Samik Bhattacharya and party leader Sunil Bansal met Chief Secretary Dushyant Nariala at Nabanna to discuss government formation and post-poll law and order issues. Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal also met Governor R.N. Ravi regarding the formation of the new government.
Samik Bhattacharya said the BJP would not induct members from the Trinamul Congress and called for maintaining law and order during the transition. He said the Governor and the Election Commission should ensure peace during the change of government.
