Sharib Hashmi And Nasreen’s Love Story, She Convinced Her Family, He Became Her Strength Amid Cancer

Sharib Hashmi, an actor par excellence, has mesmerised everyone with his versatility over the years. We know him as ‘J.K. Talpade’ from The Family Man, but he has been active in front of and behind the camera for the past two decades. Apart from being a spectacular actor, Sharib is a soulful singer too, and his social media handle is proof of it, as he never misses an opportunity to render some melodious tracks.

Born into a middle-class family in Malad, Mumbai, to noted film journalist Z.A. Johar, Sharib worked behind the scenes in MTV Roadies Season 2 and MTV Bakra. Sharib made his acting debut in 2008 with a small role in Slumdog Millionaire. He later appeared in films such as Haal-e-Dil, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Vodka Diaries, Ujda Chaman, Darbaan, Vikram Vedha, and many others. After years of hard work, fame knocked on his door in the form of The Family Man. As ‘Jayavant Kashinath “JK” Talpade’, he has been ruling the Indian screens since 2019.

Sharib is definitely an effortless actor, but when the cameras stop rolling, he is a loving husband and a doting father. With his own fairy tale love story with Nasreen, Sharib made people believe in old-school love. It’s been 23 years since Sharib and Nasreen’s marriage, and even today, they look back at their college love with a lot of profound memories.

Sharib Hashmi and Nasreen fell in love in college

Sharib Hashmi and Nasreen were in the same college and were introduced to each other by her brother. They fell in love, but he never proposed because of the ‘bro code’. But despite that, they spent time together. But when Nasreen’s brother learned about them, he was clearly upset. He confronted Sharib and told him they could never marry.

In an interview with Hauterrfly, Sharib recalled the same and revealed that Nasreen’s brother’s main concern was Sharib’s height and that they belonged to different castes. Nasreen’s brother told Sharib that she would be married off in six months, whereas he was still in college. After the confrontation, Sharib broke up with Nasreen.

Nasreen was shattered after her breakup with Sharib

While Sharib took the decision to break up with Nasreen and move on, she was devastated by the breakup. In the same interaction, Nasreen revealed that he didn’t even think of her, and even after she begged him not to leave her, he gave up on her and left. But Nasreen never lost hope and kept waiting for him.

Not only did he leave, but he also got engaged to someone else. Nasreen waited for him for three years, and when she learned of his engagement, she told her family to look for an alliance for her too. But within a year and a half, Sharib’s engagement broke, and the first person he wanted to see was Nasreen. It was at that moment that he realised that there was no one else with whom he could stay happy.

When Sharib connected with Nasreen again, she told him that he had to speak to her parents for their alliance. But convincing each other’s families was not easy at all. When Sharib went to her home to speak to her parents about their alliance, he was unemployed, but Nasreen lied to her mother, saying that Sharib earned Rs. 15,000 a month, which was huge back then.

Nasreen’s family agreed to the alliance, but Sharib faced resistance at his place because his mother didn’t approve of it. But Sharib’s mother’s best friend supported Nasreen and Sharib’s alliance. But when she slipped into a coma and passed away, Sharib’s mother turned extremely emotional and agreed to their union. After convincing each other’s respective families, Sharib and Nasreen got married in 2003 and became parents to a son and a daughter.

Nasreen sold her jewellery and home to support Sharib’s acting dream

When Sharib and Nasreen began their life together, he was working at MTV as a writer, but he eventually wanted to be an actor, which was only possible if he left his stable writing job. It was a huge risk as Sharib was building a family with Nasreen. But she believed in him and asked him to pursue his dreams while she handled the finances at home.

He auditioned for years without success, took loans and later worked on scripting. The finances were short, but like a warrior, Nasreen stood by Sharib. She sold her jewellery and home to support. Recalling the financial crunch, Nasreen told ETV:

“I sold my jewellery bit by bit. We couldn’t continue with our house either and had to sell it. Then I had to sell the house from my inheritance. There was a point when we had zero money, not even enough to last us another day.”

Despite all this, Nasreen remained Sharib’s emotional anchor, who never stopped believing in him. After nearly 15 years of struggle, things finally changed when Sharib was cast in The Family Man. He became a household name and soon got projects like Scam 1992, Asur, Pagglait, Fighter, Tarla and The Diplomat.

Sharib Hashmi and Nasreen battled her cancer together

When everything was going smoothly in Sharib and Nasreen’s life, another blow hit the couple after Nasreen was diagnosed with Oral cancer in 2018. In a podcast with Hauterrfly, Nasreen revealed that Sharib was shattered after her cancer diagnosis and has never left her side since then. She underwent five surgeries and is now fighting her sixth relapse. Speaking about it, she shared:

“My cancer is very aggressive in nature, which is why it keeps relapsing. This is now the sixth time, and this time it has spread more.”

Despite the hectic shoots, Sharib never missed the hospital visits, and it gave Nasreen a sense of relief that he was there. The couple feels that their relationship has evolved, and they no longer need to say I love you to each other, as he said, “Most of the time, we didn’t really have money. But love was the only constant.”

Sharib Hashmi and Nasreen’s love is built on faith. No matter whatever life throws at them, they face every challenge with the belief that they have each other forever.
