Udupi: The family of a Kundapur man whose body was found cut into nine pieces in Sharjah last month has sought the authorities’ help to bring his remains back to India and ensure a proper investigation.
The deceased has been identified as Alwin Prakash Kunder, who was working as a senior manager at Terminal 2 in Sharjah. His family received confirmation of his death after his DNA matched the remains recovered from his car.
Prakash was a native of Honnakeri in Kundapur town of Udupi district. Prakash and his wife had been living and working in Sharjah for about 14 years. They have a son.
According to his brother, Anil Prashanth Kunder, who has been contacting officials in India for help in bringing back the remains, the family first realised that something was wrong after Prakash stopped responding to calls and messages.
Prashanth said he had last spoken to his brother on July 20. After that, he received only text messages from Prakash’s number.
Prakash normally communicated with the family through voice messages or phone calls and never through text messages, Prashanth said. When he questioned his brother about the change, the messages stopped.
As the phone numbers of Prakash’s wife and son were switched off, the family contacted his office. They were told that Prakash was on a month-long leave. It was believed that he had gone to India.
However while checking the passport it was learnt that he was still in Sharjah.
On August 12, the family learnt that a body had been found in Prakash’s car. The identity of the deceased was not known initially. The remains were later identified through DNA testing involving a close family relative, with the results confirming a few days ago that they belonged to Prakash.
According to details available to the family from the post-mortem and preliminary inquiry, the body had been cut into nine pieces and packed in two bags.
Prakash’s wife and son had also left their place of residence and could not be contacted, the family said. There has been no confirmation from the family about their whereabouts, though it is said that the two had returned to India.
Prashanth has lodged a missing-person complaint at Udupi Town police station and is seeking a copy of the FIR and other documents relating to the case in Sharjah.
“We need a copy of the FIR and we need the body to be brought back. We also spoke to the police. We felt that without an FIR, it would not be possible to proceed further there,” Prashanth said.
The family has approached Udupi Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar and submitted a representation to MLC Kota Srinivas Poojary, seeking steps to bring Prakash’s remains to India through legal procedures.
According to preliminary information received by the family, CCTV footage reportedly showed three people placing the body in the boot of Prakash’s car and later leaving the vehicle at a parking location.
Prashanth said Prakash had not told the family that he was facing any problem before his death.
Shankar told reporters that Prakash’s brother had met him on Tuesday and submitted a petition seeking assistance in the case.
“As far as assistance is concerned, unless a letter rogatory or Red Corner Notice or any Interpol notices are issued against the alleged accused, there is no legal measure to be done from Udupi police at this point of time,” he said.
“We will also be seeking information regarding the same through Interpol channels,” he added.
