Geoff Ogilvy nearly led the International team to a decades-long, drought-busting victory at the 2026 Presidents Cup.
In the end, the U.S. team won 17-13. But if not for a furious American charge in Sunday singles, Ogilvy’s captaincy would be remembered forever around the world.
The fact is the former U.S. Open champion seemed to do everything right the first three days of the Presidents Cup. Heading into Sunday, he had the Americans embarrassed, and Brandt Snedeker, his captain counterpart on the U.S. side, apologizing for mistakes.
Though Ogilvy’s team didn’t come through with the win, could he possibly get another shot to deliver the International team its first Presidents Cup victory since 1998?
On the latest episode of GOLF’s Subpar, hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz dug into that question. The way they see it, Ogilvy should be given another chance to “run it back” as International team captain.
Knost and Stoltz noted that the 2028 Presidents Cup will be held in Ogilvy’s home country of Australia, which should give even more reason to make him a repeat captain. Furthermore, the International team’s lone win came in Australia, exactly 30 years before the 2028 event.
However, Ogilvy does have to deal with the possibility of fellow Australian Adam Scott being named captain in 2028.
“Geoff Ogilvy getting a lot of rave reviews for him being captain. A lot of talk about him possibly running it back because it’s in Australia. The only problem is Adam Scott is kind of a big deal in Australia,” Knost said on Subpar.
Stoltz quickly suggested Scott could again be a player on the team, as he was this year at Medinah.
“Would you expect [Scott] not to be on that team right now? He’s getting faster off the tee,” Stoltz argued.
Knost responded by bringing up the fact that Scott could serve as player and captain, as Tiger Woods did for the U.S. team in 2019.
“He might be a playing captain. Tiger was a playing captain down there,” Knost said.
Despite Scott’s potential candidacy, both Knost and Stoltz eventually agreed that Ogilvy would be the best choice as captain.
“[Ogilvy is] so well spoken, the players respect him so much,” Knost argued. “He’s not playing a whole lot right now. He’s more involved in his design business. He can give this captaincy all he wants.”
“I thought going into [the 2026 Presidents Cup], I was like Geoff will do the right things, say the right things, make the right calls, and he did,” Stoltz added. “I’d run it back with him, especially the fact it’s in Australia.”
The 2028 Presidents Cup officially gets underway two years from now in late 2028 at Kingston Heath Golf Club in Australia.
